Tell me if I'm being an idiot but...

Has anyone noticed that the hellkom.co.za domain can no longer be resolved through .co.za name servers?

  • Browsing yields "host not found"
  • `dig @196.25.255.3 hellkom.co.za` yeilds no results.
  • `dig @ns0.coza.net.za hellkom.co.za` yeilds no results
  • A lookup on whois.co.za shows a valid registration.
  • Primary DNS from WHOIS: ns15.zoneedit.com
  • `dig @ns15.zoneedit.com hellkom.co.za` yields valid results: 213.133.104.104

Interesting, huh?

Um, you're not an idiot - but there's only one L in helkom. :p

But there is something funny with that top image on helkom for me...

O'rly?

You're right, helkom.co.za (one L) does work... but...

  • I know hellkom.co.za used to work - my bookmark points there.
  • The site's title says "hellkom.co.za"
  • Wikipedia has "hellkom.co.za" and "hellkom"
  • "hellkom.co.za" *is* a registered domain, also by Greg Stirton
  • Viewing the source code of "www.helkom.co.za" shows links to resources (CSS file, specifically) on "hellkom.co.za"
  • Through WHOIS and DIG, the IP address for helkom.co.za is (should be?) the same as hellkom.co.za.

It seems like the clever Mr Stirton registered both and pointed them both to the same place, using *four* different DNS servers to make absolutely sure that the site did not disappear because of "technical issues".

With this new information, the fact that hellkom.co.za has disappeared has become even more intriguing!

Ah, okay. I'd just assumed that it was one L like telkom. But you know what they say about assumed - it makes an ass of you, me and Ed. :p
