Hellkom confirms Telkom threat
12/08/2004 09:18 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Telkom has given the website www.hellkom.co.za until tomorrow (Friday) to shut down its site else it will sue the owner of the site for R5m, Hellkom confirmed on Thursday.
The telecommications giant sent out letters of demand to both Hellkom and www.telkomsucks.co.za on Wednesday requesting them to refrain from making unauthorised use of Telkom's trademark and using disparaging logos.
Hellkom webmaster Gregg Stirton, who has the support of the union Solidarity and "many South Africans" said the high cost and low quality of Telkom's telecommunication services was hampering South Africa's economic growth potential.
He said he has the protected right to use parody, but said he would seek legal advice before making any decisions.
Last week trade union Solidarity entered into an alliance with Hellkom following Telkom's announcement of its plans to retrench 4 181 workers over the next three years.
"Hellkom is only promoting the public's freedom of speech. Telkom's letter sounds like something from the PW Botha-era," Solidarity spokesperson Dirk Hermann said.
In another development, the Hellkom website will in the future be hosted in Germany due to the high cost of hosting a website in South Africa.
