Johannesburg - The trade union Solidarity and the anti-Telkom website www.hellkom.co.za are to co-operate to avert the wave of retrenchments at communications monopoly Telkom, Solidarity said in a statement on Tuesday.
Hellkom's webmaster, Greg Stirton, said that the site had more than 80 000 hits since its launch six months ago.
Dissatisfied Telkom clients form the largest part of the visitors to the site. The website highlights the high call rates charged to Telkom clients, compared to the cost of telephone calls elsewhere in the world.
Stirton claims that Telkom's high tariffs and poor service prevent the country from showing its real growth potential.
Telkom is also being accused of making exorbitant profits while providing only a basic service.
In a step to mobolise the public againts the Telkom lay-offs, Solidarity and hellkom have created an e-mail address - [email protected] - and users' forum where the public can "complain about Telkom's service and the company's planned staff lay-offs", Solidarity spokesperson Dirk Herman said.
"Hellkom can play an important role in informing the public on the Telkom way of doing business," he added.
Solidarity launched its action plan last week with a protest march by members of the trade union at the Telkom head office.
A memorandum, in which a one-year moratorium on retrenchments was demanded, was handed to Telkom.
Solidarity also plans to appoint a commission of enquiry to look into the proposed retrenchments.
Telkom was not immediately available for comment.
