Hey all,

Placed an order for a new line to be installed a while ago and I got a tech (well a person from a contractor company that says Telkom sent him) to come and do the install.

He pitched up on time, walked through the front door and asked to see the old lines (he wasn't too friendly but I politely showed him the old install) and asked why he needed to see it. He told me he had to see the old line so he knew where to install the new line.

I told him that I'd like the new line installed in the study and showed him the room. He asked to see the point where the old lines entered the house, but the problem is that it's all underground and leads into the house from the facade of the house, inside the wall.

He said he was not allowed to go into the roof and that the new line absolute had to be installed from the existing point, which was impossible as there are no free pairs left, told him this and he seemed unimpressed.

So we talked for about 30 minutes looking for a solution (I had to make the calls to people to ask them because this guy didn't give a **** and stood there looking at the lawn) and I eventually got somewhere. I needed to employ an electrician and landscaper to dig new conduits from the manhole (2m from the perimeter wall of the facade) and have an electrician do the install. Then have the Telkom guy come back and activate it at the exchange.

At no point did the "Telkom" guy say assist in anything so I may be just wrong completely due to misinformation on his part. Thanks

Am I being taken for a ride somewhere here? What exactly does the self-install cost cover if I have to get an electrician to do everything for telkom?

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks <3

The sign of things to come... soon Telkom will be outsourcing its entire field force!!

May not climb onto roof or into ceiling - true.

Insisting on a draw wire in a conduit provided by you - true.

Unhelpful git - poor form.

Ok great, so I'll have the electrician get the conduit installed today and give the Tech a call.

Do they do the the rest once or do I then have to run the cable from the manhole myself and install the outlet? If I drew a straight line from the manhole to the study (which is on the 2nd floor patio) it would be 8m or less. So it really should be a simple job.

Welp technician has to call the area manager to get permission to do the install... So.. Yea gonna give him a call and see.

@MickeyD

Area manager on leave. Tech guy not interested. Rescheduling on website shows no open dates for the next month.

Options?

Once I convinced the tech who installed my line that the manhole was indeed theirs(took a few callouts and wining from my side) and he found a ladder somewhere he just ran the cable overground to a junction box I installed outside against the wall. I then did the rest of the install putting the cable underground in coduit and into the roof to the point I needed. Im sure this is not protocol but at least I have my line.

So in short keep phoning, ask the rep on here and log calls online and see if you can find a helpful techie willing to put in some effort they do exist.

I almost gave up but after a few months had succsess.

I need to get a new line also, but from what I have heard its easier and quicker to just get the current Telkom line "transferred" to my new place?

Service transferred... makes the process easier as you won't have to go through the entire signup procedure again (RICA, proof of bank statements, pay a deposit, etc.).
