Hi there

I'm finally moved over from the iBurps camp. My ADSL line will be installed within the next few hours. Yip, as hard as it is to believe, Telkom seems to have pulled their socks up a tad bit.

I will be leaving work within the next 25 minutes to open up for them and let them do the necessary.

I would appreciate any info about ADSL and any potential gotchas. I have applied for a 512k service.

Kind Regards,
Turiko

If you have a router that is capable of it, see if you can check your line statistics (noise margin and line attenuation). Compare those figures to the ranges explained here: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost.php?p=1239914&postcount=7

If you find your figures poor, see if you can get the installer to take a closer look at the cabling within your house to see if he can clean it up a bit.

Another test you may want to do is start downloading something (while monitoring your line statistics) and give your landline a call. Some people report losing synch when receiving a call. Similarly, you may also want to try making a call from the landline (and make sure that you have filters installed on all devices on the line, except of course the ADSL modem). If both go without a hitch (no loss of synch, drastic drop in line statistics), you're gold... Enjoy your ADSL ;)

Hey man! That's great! I love my ADSL... I'm almost done downloading the internet on mine! :)

The ADSL went in this afternoon as per what Telkom promised :) Seems they're feeling the heat from the competition. Anyway, me trundles off to phone Dave Luis and tell him to shut down the iBurps lines.

The house is not old. We checked the cabling today and it is brand spanking new. Previous owner of the house ran a business from this property as there were 5 lines running into the house via a 5 pair cable. Anyway I got him to check these kinds of things and it is very very good.

If u get the the router with the wireless just remember to log in and change the password or just disable the AP so that someone else can't log into your router and use your internet. Since telkom gives almost everyone the same router the password is the same even if they say its not.

I know for sure that my cabling is faulty coming into one of the rooms, hence I lose sync a lot. If the Telkom techie replaces the cabling with new cables, will they charge me?

Tough to answer. But whenever I have had an issue that turned out to be due to cabling (inside the house), I have not been charged (no callout, no wiring charge, nothing).

I think if you can get a technician to come out and convince him (i.e. get him to diagnose) it's the wiring at fault, then he should replace it without charging you.

I've spoken to like 5 different people and apparently someone is coming out tomorrow so let's cross fingers. But what these guys did without my consent is drop my line speed to 1Mb. But at this speed my DS margin is 25!

My router doesn't lose sync when connected in the other room, only here in my bedroom where the PC is so it's gotta be the cabling. (I've already replaced the jack so it can't be that).
