I am investing in an IBM notebook, after much investigation and consternation, and am looking for the best, most affordable way to connect when I'm out on the road.

I'm not a techie, so go easy on me guys :)

I know I can use a bluetooth/GPRS enabled phone to send/receive mail and connect, albeit rather slowly, to the WWW. What other options are available?

Do I have to invest in an iBurst contract?

I looked at 3G, but it seems really pricey, I mean on top of a business cellphone contract and all. Won't 3G technology become a lot cheaper in the new future?

As with Blackberry?

It should become cheaper - you'd have to ask the user Vodacom3g who helps out here - he's a representative of Vodacom.

I'll go out on a limb here and say avoid iBurst - that's my honest opinion based on what I've read on these forums and heard from people who have it/tested it.

Vodacom3G may be expensive, but it's the only viable 'on the road' internet access technology worth having at the moment - there is nothing else as reliable or with as much coverage.

It all depends how much data you think you will use - if your going to be going well over 1gig a month, you better have some deep pockets !

mike - IBurst's coverage is simply not good enough to cover a hell of a lot of SA, and this is where 3G wins hands down.
So - you can get an IBurst if you're not going to leave the city, but if you're gonna expect coverage in a valley, on a hill, or on the outskirts of town, 3g is the ONLY option.
Some have managed with both 3G + IBurst, as IBurst is a lot cheaper then 3G.

Thanks guys, that's really helpful. I will do the sums and see from there...

Dunno about the ISP options but well done on getting a IBM, I got a T43 last week and it was well worth the extra cash spent over a hp/tosh/acer laptop.

The IBM connectivity manager is top class for wired/wireless/vpn connections so u wont be disapointed if a a business user on the move :P
