I've spent the last couple of weeks putting together a web based tool. It started off as a tool for work, but I've replicated the project and being spending my evenings adjusting it for outside users. The next step is getting a website registered. I have an exisiting VPS I'll be hosting it on. The obvious answer is to register the domain with domains.co.za. Is there a better option, or something that includes basic email? Is self hosting basic email - basically just one address, info@ - feasible?

This is a side-project which *might* at some stage in the future be revenue generating but for now is very definitly not yet which means that right now cheaper is better.

Not sure what you mean by basic hosting but yes, you can get email only. Or you can point domain to Google afaik if you pay.

Cloudflare is nice for DNS as well. You can always point records at different servers.
 
Gemini says I should register the domain and then use CloudFlare email routing to forward emails to my existing Gmail, so I don't need email hosting, by the sounds of things, which simplifies the process significantly.

Which is fine if you don't mind replying from your Gmail address as opposed to the actual domain, assuming you want to reply..

Gemini has a solution for that too.

Sign up for a free Brevo (formerly Sendinblue) or SMTP2GO account (free tiers offer 300 to 1,000 emails/month). Plug those SMTP details into Gmail settings, and you can send official [email protected] replies right from Gmail.

With most of the email hosters you can get one email address and then also do free forwarders.

So register [email protected], and then you can do forwards for emails like [email protected] and fwd it to [email protected]
When you reply to any mail though it will always come from the main registered email.

Use Cloudflare as they have free dns with a basic WAF which isn't too bad.

There are loads of providers that do hosting + email, or hosting, or email.
