Hi all,

I am in the final year of my PhD candidacy at the University of Cape Town. In order to finish my research I am desperately trying to find 15 more study participants. There are two reasons why I wanted to start this thread. First and foremost, I wanted to get your advice on where to find these research participants (i.e. people who are willing to participate in research studies). Second, as I am posting about my study anyway, I might as well use this opportunity to ask if you are perhaps keen on participating in my study?

So far, I have recruited via active recruitment, radio, newspapers, media release, social media and newsletters. However, most of my participants (180 total) come from friend/family referrals. Active recruitment (i.e. going out there and speak to random people) is the least fruitful; I guess people are not waiting to be approached during their time off. Q1 is: How would you go about and recruit study participants?

Q2 is: Would you please consider helping me out by participating in my study? If you are from the Cape Town area, and you want to find out if you are eligible, please consider participating. Also, please forward this message / link to as many of your friends and family in Cape Town.

What is the study about?
I can't say too much, because that may influence potential participant's behaviour and affect my study results. It's about Health, Lifestyle and Sleep.

Who can participate?
I am looking for 10-15 more participants with a BMI less than 25, and a waist circumference less than 88cm (females) or 102cm (males) (the low BMI group), and 10 more participants with a BMI over 25, and a waist circumference over 88cm (for females) or 102cm (for males) (the high BMI group). Age must be >30, but preferably around 50 yrs old. For some reason participants in this age category are specifically hard to recruit.

What does participation entail?
You are required to visit the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (Boundary rd, Newlands, Cape Town) on the agreed-upon date and time (this is not a commercial research study, the UCT division where I study at is just based in the Sports Science Institute). We will then perform the following assessments:
  • Health and Lifestyle questionnaire.
  • Height, weight and waist circumference.
  • Fingerprick glucose and cholesterol test.
  • Blood samples to test for: glucose, insulin, HbA1c and cholesterol.
  • Simple fitness test.
  • Asked to wear a activity tracker and keep a diary for the next 7 days.
For those in the low BMI group:
  • Optional body composition scan.
  • Optional resting metabolic rate test.
  • Optional 2-night at-home sleep study (polysomnography).
For those in the high BMI group:
  • No option for body composition scan, resting metabolic rate test or polysomnography.
  • Repeat the assessments after 8 weeks.
Why would you participate?
  • It's fun!
  • It's free!
  • You'll learn a lot about yourself, because all results will be shared with you.
  • YOU HELP ME OUT!!
How do I participate?
Thanks so much!

102cm waist? Isn't that quite high, especially for someone with low BMI? I am about 1.75, with a waist of 82cm, ~20 BMI. Wouldn't that be a really tall person to hit over 102cm with under 25 BMI? That's quite constraining on your pool of candidates. I highly doubt there are many over 30, near 50 who are in that range.

The waist circumference criteria is only for the high BMI group. The low BMI group must have a waist circumference below 88cm (females) and 102cm (males), but as you said, everyone with a BMI less than 25 will meet that criteria. I have edited the original post for clarity.

Thanks for commenting!!

I don't sleep much. If this could help me know why it don't sleep I might participate. But I'm not in Cape Town. Good luck....

Thanks for commenting. The study is an observational study, so you will find out the what, but not the why. Unfortunately participants need to be located in Cape Town. Thanks though.

I would have participated but alas I am in KZN

I might be interested, so long as they/you stick to the agreed times and there's no waiting around involved.

Thanks saor. You will only be dealing with me, and I will be super strict when it comes to time. There will be no waiting.

Assume this is for cape town subjects and not Gauteng

Thanks so much!

Quite the opposite; for the assessment you are required to be fasted. ;)
So snacks after the assessment, I will make sure I get some along with me. I get really cranky when I am hungry.
What time is it going to be, I can try to get my wife along too.

Anyone who meets the inclusion criteria can participate, however, participation does require one or two visits to the Sports Science Institute of South Africa in Newlands, Cape Town. If you are from Gauteng, it may not be practical to participate.

After you and your wife have each completed the questionnaire, I will contact you to arrange your assessment. It must be in the morning (because fasting) and it can be on any on any weekday, or Saturdays. Thanks!
