Is it possible to mix different brands for example, the indoor unit Defy and the outdoor unit LG with both being rated for 12000 BTU?
And does an inverted unit really save you on electricity? I know it is debatable, depending on the amount of time the unit stays on but consider this, I live in Upington a.k.a Hell number 2 just hotter. So I run mine for long periods of time if not some the almost the whole day.
Is the R2000 price increase really worth it?

Some first-hand experience would be much appreciated.

Inverters do make a substantial difference, not sure if it's as high as the 60% claimed by some manufacturers but it is still substantial.

In theory you could mix different brands so long as they use the same control scheme. Otherwise you would need a third party controller to do the interface between the two. I wouldn't recommend it.

Go for a bigger unit.
Also look at evaporative cooling ... works well in Upington. (Up to a point)

The thing is, i am in the proses of buying a house so budget is limited. I would like to have about 3 units bought before i move in so that cleaning can be done and dusted before i start moving my stuff. Wish i can remember the size of the 3 rooms that theyll be cooling but i think 2*12000 BTU and one 18/24000 BTU unit would work.
