I have recently purchased an apple iphone 3g.
Is itunes the only site to download iphone applications?
I dont wanna reg. with itunes cause of credit card details required!!

Please advise...

Yes and no

The iTunes app store is the only official place you can get apps for your iPhone 3G. You don't have to sign up with a credit card to get the free apps and you can even get free apps from the United States app store that has a lot more apps than the ZA store. Here's a guide on how to do that:

Alternatively you can jailbreak your iPhone and load available apps on it using Cydia, but this is not supported by Apple. This will not give you free access to payed apps from the appstore.

You don't need a credit card to sign up. I registered without it and once OS3.0 is released (June 17) I will jailbreak my phone to benefit from the thousands of other free apps.

I'll be repairing (un-jailbreaking?) mine just before 3.0 comes out. I'm looking forward to some semblance of stability on my phone again. :o

please define jailbrake? What is the process???

Jailbreak

The iPhone runs a BSD based operating system. Apple took it and stripped a lot of stuff out of it and added a bunch of protection which restricts it to run only code certified by Apple.

Jailbreaking removes some of the protection apple added which allows you to run code on the phone which was not signed by Apple. All iTunes app store apps are signed by Apple.

There is a slight risk associated with jailbreaking your phone, so I don't recommend it if you don't understand what I just said. You will need to google around anyway and make sure you are 100% clued up on the process before attempting it.

Heed that warning I attempted the jailbreak a week ago, midway through the restore it crashed. I had to download the software from the Apple site at 2am in the morning on a Iburst 1mb line (4 hours later) the 246.4mb file was done and lucky for me I had backedup all my stuff so I now tread lightly. OS 3.0 is what I am waiting for. Mms, cut & paste is the main things I am waiting for
