I have a friend of mine who just bought an a DSTV decoder. He's more of a do-it-yourself kind of guy, so he also bought a dish and other necessary items. The problem is he doesn't know which LNB to buy. He's not looking for something fancy that will cost him R800. He just want one that will get the job done and not give him any troubles. Any suggestions?

You do not specify which DSTV decoder he purchased, but I would think the best option would be to get the latest version of the DSTV Smart LNB, the LMX501 which should cover all the bases. https://www.ellies.co.za/product/multichoice-smart-lnb-lmx501/

I got lucky and purchashed one at from PnP mark-down table for R200. I am yet to install it, possibly a project for the Heritage Day long weekend. I also want to replace the 18+ years old co-ax cables.

Forget the LNB, how's he going to mount it? Unless he has a satellite finder he won't know where to point the thing. He'll have to hire someone to do it for him, and that person will know what LNB to use.

Websites like http://www.dishpointer.com/ will give you all the information that you will need to get you up-and-running in no time. There's also apps you can install on your phone that will assist you in pointing the dish in the right direction.

Information for Pretoria is as follows:
Satellite Data
Name: 68.5E INTELSAT 20 (IS-20) | INTELSAT 36 (IS-36)
Distance: 38066km
Dish Setup Data
Elevation: 36.4°
Azimuth (true): 62.9°
Azimuth (magn.): 81.8°
LNB Skew [?]: 53.3°

Like I said, he has all the necessary equipment needed, he only needs to know which LNB to choose, and these installers can be a pain sometimes to work with so that's why he choose to do it himself.

Thanks. I'll pass the information to him.

Well then, as geezer said, the latest Smart LNB is the way to go

Will this one do? It's R175 cheaper than the LMX501(recommended)

That will work fine, so long as he does not ever plan on doing extraview with older decoders which do not support the unicable ports..

Also, if he plans on using a sat finder, an analogue one won't work with the smart LNB.. I learned that the hard way.. :)
