Howzit guys,

Just a quick noob question, is it possible to link two modems through wifi and then use the ethernet cables to connect devices on each side?

Basically, I have Billion 7300RE modem which is connected to ADSL. I use to be with Neotel for a few years so i have a Axesstel CDMA 1xEV-DO Rev A MV420R modem just lying around.

Since the Neotel Axesstel modem use to pick up Neotels wireless frequencies would it be possible to put custom firmware on it and set it to pick up the Billion modems wifi signal and then use that as an access point for devices connected to it via ethernet and wifi?

Set up:
Upstairs ->
Billion router is connected to ADSL along with 3 ethernet devices and 3 wifi devices.

Downstairs ->
This is where im planning to put the Axesstel modem and connect it to the media centre so that i can connect our current entertainment setup via ethernet and also boost wifi signals downstairs.

Is something like this possible and is there anyone who has a setup similar to this that can offer the famous and well known special myBB technical advice? :D

TIA!

I tried to do the same thing a while ago.

If I remember correctly, for some reason the wireless setup between the two routers requires one to drop the wireless security of the network to an older standard. I can't remember which one - maybe WEP. Also, from what I can tell, the wireless speed effectively becomes twice as slow.

Using an ethernet cable makes for a much better setup from what I understand.

Both routers support 2.4GHz WIFI and technically it's possible to connect them to each other (it's called a WIFI bridge). However this depends on:
1. Whether the router firmware supports it.
2. Whether the routers are the same brand.
3. The signal between the routers generally has to be quite strong so in practice it doesn't really work so well between different floors.

On point 2. I have a TP-Link MR3420 and a Billion 7402 (Mweb W40) and both support WIFI bridging. However trying to connect them to each other causes both routers to hang.

If I were you, I would look at going the Ethernet over powerline route

EDIT: Or as suggested below, the "SD" method which is the cheapest.

Also tried this setup with two d-link Routers, I ended up reverting back to a SD(Stuk Draad) ;) as Viva said ethernet cable is the best option.

Correct, WIFI bridging doesn't support WPA (as far as I know.)

Thanks for the advice guys. It might be a bit of a mission to get it up and running. Ethernet over power line seems very interesting though! Anybody use it? Is it fast/reliable (able to stream 1080p video files from home network without buffering)?

I've seen 720p streaming fine on the older powerline adapters (ie. less than 500Mbps links). I reckon the newer ones should handle it.

I did this with a linksys router running DD-WRT - i currently only use it as a client bridge (basically convert Wifi into to Ethernet) though i did manage to get it to work as a repeater bridge which is more or less what you want to do although its advised not to i got it to work on the same SSID - since i didn't need it boost WiFi for me this was a waste, so stuck to client bridge. oh and its using WPA2 security so its still secure but yes it does slow down the WiFi network

you need to check if your router can run DD-WRT and install the specific firmware - http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database

Hi Therer,
I would go the ethernet cable option. Much better performance.
As far as the ethernet over power connections it is fine but they need to be on the same phase and possibly even on the same circuit breaker so if you are on a 3 phase connection then they will not work.

Borrow some first before you buy.
