Hi Guys

I am struggling to connect to the internet. got my username and password from mweb, but i can't connect. What ip,dns, dhcp must i use. i can't call mweb cause my analogue line at home is stone dead, but my adsl is synching.

please help

in the Web interface, do the following:
  1. Go to Advanced Setup -> WAN
  2. Remove all existing WAN interfaces
  3. Add a WAN interface
    • Port=0, VPI=8, VCI=35, Service Category=UBR without PCR, Unselect Enable Quality of Service
    • Select PPPoE over Ethernet (PPPoE) & Encapsulation Mode=LLC/SNAP-BRIDGING
    • Enter your username ([email protected]) & password, Leave Authentication mode=auto, Leave Obtain default gateway automatically selected, Select Keep alive PPP connection, Leave Dial on demand unselected, Leave Static IP address unselected, Select Bridge PPPoE Frames Between WAN and Local Ports (this is for half-bridging / PPPoE Relaying / PPPoE Passthrough), Leave MTU=1492
    • Select Enable NAT, Select Enable Firewall, Unselect Enable IGMP Multicast, Select Enable WAN Service, Set Service name to something descriptive like: PPPoE_Mweb
  4. Save & Reboot

Now under Device Info, all the fields should be filled in!
And under Diagnostics, everything should PASS, except for the 2x ATM OAM F5 tests.

* Update:
With regards to your telephone connection: how did you connect the telephones & ADSL to the Telkom line?
Both the ADSL router/modem and the telephones MUST be connected via a (micro) filter to the Telkom line!
You can get a splitter filter (where you can plug in both a telephone and ADSL modem) from Telkom shop for like R42 or something like that.

Hi Pada

Thanks for all the info, but i did all that you have mention.
The 2x ATM OAM F5 tests does fail, but also the last one on the list that says something about DNS Server also failed.
I did get a filter when i bought the modem. i have plugged the phone line into the 1 section of the splitter and on the other side it splits in 2 and says dsl and line. I is connected properly.

I think it might be the adsl verification part, but i cannot go into any website. I know you have to go to www.telkom\verifyadsl if i am correct. The other thing is i cannot call Telkom for support as my analogue is dead when they activated my adsl line. its syncing properly with the green internet light coming on. wanted to call them and do a manuel activation. can telkom still activate it for me even though the modem is off?

You posted a wrong address for the ADSL verification. It should be: http://www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl/
Here are all the DSL related links: http://www.telkom.co.za/products_services/dsl/related_links.html
Currently that Verify ADSL website is broken.

If the DNS server failed in the diagnostics, run the following in Command Prompt and see which server gives you a valid response:
nslookup www.google.co.za 196.28.80.140
nslookup www.google.co.za 196.28.80.139
nslookup www.google.co.za 196.25.1.11
nslookup www.google.co.za 8.8.8.8
* The first 2 IP addresses was the Primary & Secondary DNS servers that I got from the router's Device Info page. I would suggest that you test yours instead.

Then also check if you can ping 8.8.8.8 from Command Prompt.

Telkom can activate the line for you. You should be able to verify the ADSL line from any location, since you just have to specify your telephone number.
So are you 100% sure that your telephone is not working, even if you bypass all the filters? If I were you, I would've reported it as a fault long ago already.

Hi Pada

Thanks a mil man. I had the Unselect Enable Quality of Service Ticked and the Bridge PPPoE Frames Between WAN and Local Ports (this is for half-bridging / PPPoE Relaying / PPPoE Passthrough) not selected. went to telkom's adsl verification and got it activated. i must say browsign is ok, but torrents is damn slow. just streamed the wp vs sharks game without any buffering, but picture was not so clear. i think i 1mb line would suffice for me i.t.o. streaming multimedia and downloads, but then i need to take out a 4mb line of R430 which would be a waste and i'll be only using 1mb of the line. does telkom have 1mb lines and does isp's give you 1mb speeds. i am currently spending the following. Analogue line - R131, ADSL Line - R152 and uncapped from Mweb - R219 which comes out to R502. I still think its too much for what i am currently getting. If i could a 1mb line for that price or a 4mb line for R600 all inclusive i will be happy.

Would appreciate it if you can give some torrent site which are really good and bypassing the heaving shaping policies. PM me if you want.

Thanks again

Torrents will always be shaped, no matter what you do on your Mweb connection. The only way that you'll get torrents at a higher speed is if you get something like AeroVPS, where you download the torrents from a server in the UK/US and then download it via HTTP/FTP from there to here.
Rather use local/international news servers, instead of torrents. Currently sharing a 4Mbps line is probably the best value for money I would say, but then you need hardware to split the connection nicely.

Unfortunately Telkom does not offer anything between 512kbps and 1Mbps and it doesn't look like they will upgrade 384/512kbps users anytime soon either.
