Telkom will now launch ADSL exchange in our area. I have almost decided to file an application for 384kbps, but then I went to my friend. He's got a wireless connection at home from a small W-ISP.

Now check this out. Telkom's offer is up to 384, divide it by 8 = only up to 48 kilobytes per second.

My friend contract says 64k from his wisp. BUT GOOD HEAVENS, I downloaded a 9 Mb file to his computer in a blink of an eye! The download started at 80 KBps and progressed to 140 KBps which is x8 = 640kbits ps and 1120 respectively.

Do you think I should dump Telkom now?

64K = 8KB/s that file probably was cashed on the proxy server thats why it went that fast.

And what is then the ACTUAL average speed of a 384 adsl?
I really need to know from somebody who's got it at home, please.

Well, I also downloaded a 15Mb JRE from an international site in 10 minutes from my friend's computer on the same WISP. Is that good enough?

The avg speed i would say on 384 is in the low 40KB/s. See about the JRE, allmost all pc's nowadays have Java running and the update the gets cached on the proxy, so it acts as a local file then.

Thanks indeed. This gives me some idea. I'll go to that Wisp's office anyway, just to make sure. Maybe they have a trump up their sleeve :)
