Hi Guys,

So I've decided to take a jump and get myself a decent camera.

The types of pictures I will be interested in taking is landscapes and action shots and also night time photo's with the ability for long exposures.

The two camera's I've seen and which are on special is the Fujifilm S2980 or the Nikon L810.

So far I haven't seen much positive reactions to the Nikon but also haven't seen much comments on the S2980.

Thanks :)

The Nikon L810 is just a pint and shoot camera with great zoom. Not much can be set on the camera rather go for the Fujifilm. The Nikon might have higher MP and better zoom, but the Fujifilm give you much better control over what type of pics you want to take.

Rather go SLR

Rather go SLR. You can take pictures in RAWformat, which is way better than jpeg. If you don't know jpeg is a compressed quality which has image quality loss by quite a bit. If you don't mind buying new, then look at some second hand ones. If you haven't heard of ORMS (www.orms.co.za) well they can help you best with what to get and they have some decent 2nd hand cameras, for very decent prices. Most pro photographers use them.

Personally Fuji is pretty junk. Sure it looks nice and all that. But you want a camera that works well and not just look nice. Look at www.dpreview.com as they are the biggest review site of cameras for a pro level but they do most of the cameras.

A decent SLR would knock everything else out of the water.

The Panasonic Lumix FZ200 looks like a pretty impressive bit of kit when it comes to P&S. It's got the equivalent of a 24-600mm lens at f/2.8 along the entire range.

Work out what that range of glass would cost you on a DSLR and the price tag doesn't seem too bad. It also shoots RAW - as many Advanced P&S do.

Damn! That looks like a very decent camera.

Checked the samples now and images from 400 ISO upwards do tend to be pretty noisy. Especially the indoor (low light) ones. (More noise than I'm used to)

Still pretty impressed with the optics and rest of the specs. Would cost me an arm and a leg to get that type of glass on a DSLR.

Decided to get the S2980. Its just a basic for now while I test the waters of photography. If it's something I become really motivated to carry on then I will start looking at the more expensive SLR camera's just right now these were the only 2 camera's that were on special and within the budget I was willing to spend.

So far very happy with the picture quality it puts out when viewing on the pc. Still playing around with the custom modes as the user guide really isn't all that helpful apart from telling you what it does and not much of how to use it.

Anyways I hope to be posting some pics very soon :)

If you could get it - 400-600mm at f/2.8 is pretty hard to come by ;) :D
