Hehehhe wait another one - it was on one of those old 101 games disks in the days of Windows 95.
You played a nomad, you had to craft spears, you would collect flint n then go to a screen where you had to chip away stone to form the spear head. You could kill wolves and there was $#%# lightning that could strike you.

Ah nostalgia

PS it was a 2d side scroller
 
Are you sure this game exists? And that it was released in 2003-2004? That's a really long time ago in computer terms...
 
Nope my friend has never did give the most reliable descriptions - maybe it stayed in demo form

Dark Reign also comes from the same time frame and also featured robots and was RTS..
Both games were released at the same time here in SA , I had TA and my friend bought Dark Reign ,
and to me , Dark Reign was most awsome RTS ever. Was the first RTS where you can select all your units and select Search And Destroy . The music too was most awsome.

hard to decide, both the games were awesome, i couldn't decide which i wanted to play more :p

A.I.M Artificial Intelligence Machines. Graphics look very similar to Scrapland, but they describe it as a planet full of inteliigent machines. It doesn't mention anything about building bases though...

Wait, I just saw you mentioned levels. So not an open-world game then. Are you sure it wasn't just Wall-E?

Obscurish little game. Was third person, very wall-e like little robots. Had mining and base building on planets.

But I think you're friend might have remembered having to program the bots yourself, but maybe that wasn't in the demo?

You could also build up more bots to help out. And you fought these insect things. Main character was an astronaut though.
