Help Finding Ram..

Hey all, my brother in-law is looking for 2 X 512mb DDR266 ram (PC2100 / PC1600) for a real old PC. Anyone got any? Will be used on an Asus A7N266-VM mobo.

If you can't find DDR266, get DDR400 instead.

It should work - will clock down to 266
DDR400 is backward compatible with 266/333/400

Ok... nice, now need to find DDR400! I see rectron still sells 1gig DDR400 modules... Problem is the board can take 1 gig but only if its 2 X 512

I'm sure someone will swap 2x512mb for a 1gb module.

DDR400 will work... but you can only use DDR400... you will not be able mix it with DDR266

Won't the mobo only read 512mb of the 1gig? Ask Matrix Warehouse if they can test it on the PC before buying.

I've had a situation with a P4M800 DDR2 533 mobo reading only 512mb of 1gig ram.

The PC has 2 X 256 modules in it at the moment, will trash the 256 for 2 X 512.

Edit:
Have a solution, my work PC is an old P4 with 2 X 512 DDR400. I'll upgrade its ram to 2 X 1gig DDR400, and will give the Bro in-law my old ram!

DDR400 will work... but you can only use DDR400... you will not be able mix it with DDR266

You can - it'll all run at DDR266. It's all the same stuff anyway - DDR400 is just rated to run at 400MHz.

@fox1, buycomputer.co.za are smoking some bad weed.... R1k for 1024 DDr400 ... wtf? Can get it from Rectron for under R300 vat incl!

Edit: same freaking Transcend ram too!

i also had this problem, had somehting to do with single and double sided ram ,iirc
