Just moved into a townhouse and stuck in a 12 month contract. So much noise in the afternoon I can't work, especially when interviewing on the phone. How do other freelancers solve this problem? Advice appreciated.

Have you tried working in any of the coworking spaces around Jhb? Not an ideal solution since it is an extra expense, but might be worth a shot? I haven't used any yet myself (blessed with a quiet workspace at home), but have considered it just to occasionally work around other people and not be so isolated.

Different because I code, but I have an all day yapper next door so I usually turn the music way up to drown the noise out..

I even have special playlists for those extra heavy flow days..

Dunno for you, Google DIY isolation booths perhaps?

Thanks. Using white noise now but no good for interviews. I'm scared the client gets irritated with the noise and complains.

I wouldn't mind except for the expense. Just not something I can manage right now.

I've been looking at isolation booths but not sure how to proceed. The noise cancelling materials are quite costly. But that's definitely top of mind for me.

Assume the noise is from outside? If so our glass is not very sound proof, a lot carries through. If you replace the glass in a room with laminate glass it will cut down about 88% more of the noise. If its still bad perhaps a thicker door on that same room, not these hollow ones. To do that would not cost the earth (under R3K I would imagine).

all of these have noise cancelling mics, read some reviews and decide which is perfect for you, should be a great investment to your business so if you see a hefty pricetag always remember to think long term.

Go and speak to the landlord, explain your problem and ask nicely if you can terminate the contract as soon as they have other tenants.

Sometimes the money spend for the move and termination would be cheaper, and better for you sanity as oppose to staying there and “making it work”.

I spoke to a PA of a CEO in the week, dogs barking and kid crying, didn’t sound profesional at all.
