I recently helped a friend of my dads with his website for his business and used a free host (my fault) and now the website is showing this :

"The server closed the connection without sending any data.

The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems.

Due to heavy load on the server, connections may be temporarily blocked from locations that fetch an unusually high number of pages.

We apologize for the inconvenience.
"

Its been like this for a month, i only saw it after he paid me and i feel guilty so i need to fix it ASAP.

I want to switch to using DomainCheap as my host for the website but how would i get the website back (the layout, design etc). I am able to access the files through FTP server.

Thanks!

If you have ftp access, why can't you simply download the content?

I'm not exactly sure of the process, like what to download and how to then set it on the new host...

How did you get the design onto the free host in the first place? I hope you did not get paid too much...

Can you explain a little more is it a from scratch design that you made html css js php etc because if so the you had to upload it to the free host, but since you have ftp access but don't know which files to take I assume you did not code the website and instead used some free Website builder thingy meaning that even of you did retrieve the website it still won't work.

No i just used wordpress to create the website, it was working and looking great but now this damn hosting was a let down. I didnt do any coding just used Visual Composer to make the website.

i am only able to access the FTP server but cant access "http://xxxx.co.za/wp-admin"

It's weird i just cant even access the WP dashboard. Any thoughts on what i could do??

You need to get your hands on the WP database. Can you still access the hosting panel? (eg. Cpanel)?

Who is the webhost? Will make it easier for me to check what hosting panel they use etc etc. Probably proprietary though.

Okay so if I follow the method of backing up the PHPMYADMIN and Wp content. How would process be to add it to the new host?

You reverse the process. You restore the databases. You install WP again and (afaik) would need to create/restore database users and their applicable permissions. Then you can look at applying your tweaks that you did on the original site.

I have never done this myself so the above is based on moving other similar scripts from one webhost to another. It is a fairly simple process.

I've moved a WP site to another host (admittedly a long time ago) but it'd be much easier if you could access wp-admin. Since you cannot, you'll have to do the move bit by bit, and there are a number of ways to do it. But for someone who has never done so and hasn't set up WP by hand, it might be a challenge.

It might be easier to reinstall a fresh copy of WP on the new host, and then use the theme files from your old site. The theme files can be copied across using FTP (location: wp-content/themes). Whether this is an option depends on the complexity of the WP site.

There are many websites that explain how to move WP to another host - simply run a few searches to find them.
