How do I get broadband in Nature's valley (30 minutes from Plettenberg Bay) - no 3G / GPRS / iBurst coverage, Telkom won't install ADSL until 10 houses request it etc.

Any ideas on who I can contact, or what the best options would be - and the costs?

Satellite is VERY expensive, seriously there must be 10 people down there who want ADSL? I went there on holiday, its not that small, but im guessing their arent as many permanent residents, and most wouldn't want ADSL.

It would be the best option.. Otherwise what about a small WISP, there are a few in that area, you could maby get one of them to set up a receiver in the Valley, but all the trees that cover most houses might make things a problem.

As far as I know, the only 2 are Telkom SpaceStream (yes telkom) and SenTech. Telkom is cheaper. Both are VSAT. Search for that on this site, and you should come up with a few tips.

I use Telkom, and apparently the summer is the worst time for it. And I am yet to experience this because we signed up only about 10 weeks ago. So far so good. Had to phone them twice. Once the indoor unit was broken. Took them a few days to replace it. It kept losing the configuration or something. The second time their satelite was kaput. They sent a guy around and pointed the dish at another satelate and it has pretty much worked since then. It is not really broadband and its expensive. My connection is supposed to be 512KB per second, but this frequently slows down to 30 or 40KB per second. Still it is about 10 times faster than single channel ISDN which we had before. The cost is the other problem. We have the 3GB package and it is R1700 per month before you pay your ISP.

You could try Xnets, or I think the other WISP is Red Sky, if i'm not mistaken. Our school uses xnets, it's not great, but if you have no other option I guess it'll have to do. Last time I saw Red Sky's prices were a bit on the high side.

Also note that the equipment you'll need costs about R3000.

Otherwise just ask nGaGed55 to put a high site on Robberg or the Beacon Isle and link up everone in the area. Straightline distance to NV should be around 10km I think, maybe less
