Hi, thought I'll play around with some linux installation on a spare pc & cannot progress further! I downloaded Centos5.x & to me it boots off the image I cut onto CD but only seems to run in a "Live CD mode", cannot see an option anywhere (as in Ubuntu) to install permanently onto disk!
What have I done wrong & how can I overcome situation? Am using a BB, so darn difficult to read any help files on their site? Help pls?

You should really using Centos 6 if you want the latest drivers however Centos does not support installing from the live CD so you would have to download the full installation media - 1 DVD for 32bit or 2 DVDs for 64bit (2nd DVD +/- 1Gb).

IMO if you are looking for a Redhat based distro you would be better off with the Fedora 14 live CD which you can install from (not Fedora 15 because of the issues with Gnome 3).

Thanks Guys, got me self a tutorial & it said it was based on Red Hat/Centos - which is how I got involved/started?

Yo, dude, funny how some have issues with it, unless you fiddle and f@rt with it alot. Igs

I don't have a problem with Gnome 3 but it is not supported by RHEL6 which Centos is re-branded from. If you're looking to gain experience with RHEL you need a Gnome 2 distro.

Fedora 14 is very similar to Centos 5 & 6 and can probably be used with your tutorial (Centos 5.x install media is still available on local mirrors).

PM me if your tutorial demands a specific Centos version and I'll see if I can assist.

It seems that you get two versions of CentOS, the LiveCD for playing with it and then the installation DVD. I do not know which arch you are running (32-bit or 64-bit), but if you look at this local site:
http://centos.mirror.ac.za/6.0/isos/x86_64/

You need to download the CentOS-6.0-x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso (usually you do not need the second DVD, it has some extras that you can download once installation is finished anyway) if you want a more complete installation or CentOS-6.0-x86_64-minimal.iso if you want to only install a base and get everything else from the internet.

If you are new to Linux, get the DVDs just to be safe, it will install everything and it's uncle on your PC.

I have not dug any further on how to get the LiveCD onto your PC, it will be doable but much more complicated than the official installation medium.

Yo,
Download Fedora 14 Fusion.... its pimped, Centos to play with, urhm, eina

Aight,
