Ok, back in the late 80's there were two German tv series on SABC dubbed into Afrikaans. Simulcast on radio had the original German soundtrack.

The first one was round about '89 and called something like The Adventures of Simpleximustitius (Die Avonture van Simpleximustitius) was set round about the medieval times and was about this really stupid guy leaving the country for the city and his experiencing along the way, it was a comedy with adult content and extremely funny. Was broadcast at about 10pm I think.

The next one I'm not sure was about horse racing and two competing stables. The one dude was poor and always had money problems with the woman owning the competing stables always wanting to buy him out. Besides that she also had romantic interest in the other stable owner. She was smoking hot with dark hair and a mole but a bitch, her characters name was Sonja Gruber if I remember correctly. The opening theme song was by Blondie, Atomic I think. Think this was broadcast in the 7pm slot.

Any ideas?

Ok I found the second one. It's called Rivalen der Rennbahn and the characters name was actually Sylvia Gruber (Maja Maranow).
I was wrong about the theme song though but I'm pretty sure they used the Atomic song on a few occasions while the horses were running :D

Die Avonture van Simpleximustitius

Hi there

This may (or may not ) help ...

I have been trying for ages to remember the name for this show or at least something similar as well.

The show you are referring to was in set simulcast shows possibly on Tuesdays.
I remember there was sendeling Vietnam which was actually called Tour of Duty (with the paint it black theme song),
Vendetta which was actually Crime Story (with the runaways 'I why why why why wonder' theme song) and the show i think you are talking about.

I can't remember the name but i do remember it was based on a German show/book called Die Regionals (?spelling).
The guy stayed with a family that had a young daughter called Cecily and they always talked of some place called kanurba (?spelling)

*spoiler*

I think it was similar to the movie called the village as everything seemed medieval, as in swords, pikes and horses with an old guard
but with the occasional oddity ... like a computer, but by the end of the show the guy eventually escapes to the place he was trying to get to all along and it is a modern city.

So i think the concept was that these people built a walled area was a refuge from the gun crime of urban life.
but i could be wrong as was was very young at the time.
I do remember the theme song starting with a distinctive harsh piano chord.

Doh ... note to self : see latest post before posing a reply

Des Christoffel von Grimmelshausen abenteuerlicher Simplicissimus ... I think I was thinking of something else ... but slightly similar

Does the SABC sell DVDs of those old series?

they should if you request it, but AFAIk only the popular ones AND you have dodgy sound on them. My mom loves Orkney Snork Nie and Vetkoekpaleis and the DVD's they released thus far is ****ty with ****ty sound (extreme silences to extreme loudness, sometimes during the same episode)

Bagpuss [English] - Bagpuss is a 1974 UK children's television series, made by Peter Firmin and Oliver Postgate through their company Smallfilms. The title character is "an old, saggy cloth cat, baggy, and a bit loose at the seams".

:D

The Afrikaans name for this series (it was definitely dubbed from German to Afrikaans) was "ANDERKANT DIE GRENS"
I was in standard 5 and for some reason this series made some impression on me. I had a crush on one of the characters...

Those old German or late night European shows on a Friday evening were the only chance that young virile boys had to catch a glimpse of a nipple or a fondled boob or a grabbed butt ... that's it ... that's all that was allowed.
