[HELP] Insatlling Ubuntu on my PC

Hey guys

Could anyone advise me on installing uBuntu?

1) which version is the best one out? i.e The nicest looking, polished, functionality etc. because i know there are alot of different versions
Also if there is a quick local link for this it would be great!

2) i have an iMac running Vista on BootCamp and i also have leopard installed...

Would it be possible to install Ubuntu and then switch between Vista/OSX and Ubuntu on my iMac?

Mxit, The two main versions of ubuntu are ubuntu (Gnome desktop) or kubuntu (KDE desktop). There are other versions, but stick to one of the main ones.

Mostly its personal preference - KDE has more options and is more configurable, while gnome is the primary ubuntu distro and things feel a little more polished IMHO. (Though personally I prefer KDE)

I've never used bootcamp so can't answer that question, but a quick google gives this page and this thread in the ubuntuforums - looks like its not a problem. In general, the ubuntuforums are an excellent resource - one of the reasons that I think ubuntu is the best choice for new linux users.

hmm checked those links out but it all seems VERY confusing...all these commands i need to run etc etc..

Maybe i should get VMWare for Vista / Virtual PC 2007 or something to try it out...

If you download the live CD you can try it out running it off the CD.

It does take a lot of getting used to, coming from Windows.

Yeah was thinking that but it looks like it takes aaages to load up from some youtube videos

But i may give it a go..700 mb is alot though!!

Also 700MB.

What is making you want to give Ubuntu a try? If you are going to triple-boot anyway, there might not be much to gain from it...

lol! - is that a joke or do i need to really mount it somewhere? Im using vista so i can just burn the livecd iso to a cd right? :D

I just hear all this stuff about Ubuntu and me being IT inclined, i wanna get in there!

I just wanna see what its all about, play around with it, have some fun, see what all the chatter is about..

Thats why i think ill give the LiveCD a try first then i can try Triple boot later on if i think its worth all the hassle that the Triple Boot entails..

Why not get both Kubuntu and Ubuntu and try them both 'live' before you install? They both come with a bunch of features.

In short, KDE is more 'windowsy' and Gnome has a slightly more Mac feel, KDE has many more options, Gnome is a little more minimal.

I prefer Gnome.

Yeah, try the live CD first.

Triple-booting will not be a mission. Ubuntu will sort you out quick-smart.

I looked through those links you sent ...they (especially the wiki one) looked damn confusing! Also dont want to lose the data on my current windows partition..

Oh and 1,000'th post!!! :D Grandmaster baby!!!
 
Just get the ISO, burn to a CD, boot it, play with it.

You could always try it in VMWare first, always a good idea to practise in VM and then roll out for reals later.

I've no experience with Boot Camp, no Mac.

Yeah but that VMWare is also a huge download lol... I do have 2 x 3GB accounts but i usually use all of that for VoIP..

But i'll see..ill prob just DL the LiveCD's and give them a bash...Will everything work or do i have to do some tweaks? Like wireless etc
 
It all depends on your hardware, I suggest you google for "Installing Ubuntu on a _____" where _ is the laptop you have.

And there's always this: http://www.linux-laptop.net :)

Vmware Server is about 130MB, it's free, too.
