Hi Guys,

We recently last weekend had a 'Dance" and had a photographer take all of the pictures.

She has given me the memory stick and the issue is when one previews/opens any of the images, they come up "Black with red - invalid image text". I would be devastated if I were to loose these images, there are 126 in total on the SD Card.

Does anyone have any expertise or information that could help me recover these photos?

Of the 126 images, around 30 are fine and view-able the rest are "Invalid image(s)".

Memory Card/SD Card: 8GB
Image format: .JPG

Please could someone help me out here. I would be eternally grateful.

If you need any more details please feel free to PM me, I have Dropbox etc if anyone is able to assist me.

Cheers
Rob

Edit: When I move the file into Photoshop the error I get is: "Could not place the document 'IMG_1496.JPG' because a JPEG marker segment length is too short (The file may be truncated or incomplete).

Edit: Every photo has size to it 2000-5000KB's so there is data there, what I have seen so far is the photos that are working have unique header information whereas the "Invalid" images all have the same header. Not sure if that would help.

[Admin, I'm not sure if this is the correct section to post this, please move accordingly if needed]

If you can email me one of the 'faulty' pics, I have PM'ed you my email address.

I have sent through a "faulty" image. Thanks for the PM.

I had a quick look at the files in a hex editor and the entire file seems to be populated with 55 hex which is not good.

Will have another look tomorrow some time.

Your entire files are made up of 55 hexadecimal values and contains no other data so there is no way to repair the file.

Drop http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/member.php/110079-SouthBit a PM and ask him his opinion on this.

Surely the photographer has a backup of this?

Unless the photographer gave him the SD card so he could try recovery? If thats the case, unless the photographer shot to two cards, there might not be much that can be done.

The photographer has given me the original SD card used in the camera.

In your original post you said "She has given me the memory stick"? If it is on a SD card, how are you accessing the images? With a card reader? If so, have you tried a different card reader?

:( , ai that's terrible to hear. Guess that's the problem with digital these days. What happens when the card is put back into the camera?, are the photos accessible via the camera?
I Wonder if the photos saved incorrectly from the camera or if its a faulty SD card, If it was the SD card, did it go faulty after the photos were taken or before, but how will someone know this :-/
I still feel the photographer should have made a backup on their computers. I suspect they tried and saw its faulty and gave it back to you.

This

And now photog will disclaim responsibility saying op corrupted the card.

The photographer gave me the original SD card, I have a card reader built into my desktop and have also tried an external adapter which both yield the same results.

In terms of trying to view the photos on the actual camera, I have not been able to do that as the camera is with the photographer, I have requested this information from her.

The photographer has not charged me for the photos as they are corrupted as far as she is concerned so that isnt an issue thankfully.

Edit: The photographer has told me that she tried viewing the photos on the camera but the same issue arises where the corrupted images cannot be viewed.

So she told you they are corrupted before giving you the card, and you are basically trying to see if you can save them?
