So this morning I plug in my usb mouse into a laptop and it works for a few min
but then suddenly stops working, I plug the mouse into another machine and it
works fine so its not the mouse I then plug another USB mouse into the laptop
and same issue ... it detects the mouse as an unknown device and just refuses
to work.

PS laptop is running win Vista home premium(yes I know!)

what i've done so far:
1. roll back - restore point => didn't work
2. uninstall the "unknown device" and reboot laptop => didn't work
3. deleted INFCACHE.1, uninstalled device again rebooted +> still didn't work

i have no idea what else to do with :{

Maybe remove all usb drivers and reboot. (from device manager) Windows will re-install them all again.

well i have tried all the ports on the laptop they all work with other usb devices just not any mice,
i've even gone as far as to uninstall all the usb root hub's and then reboot and still the same :{

Did you check the BIOS? Some have a setting for USB mouse support.

yep just checked bios ... nothing there :{ ... the touch pad is working fine still just no external usb mice,
this is driving me crazy

Replace the root hub drivers with the generic MS ones

"Standard Universal PCI to USB Host Controller" <- This

I GOT IT TO WOOOOOOOOORRRRKKKK!!!! .... i almost wet myself!!!!

sigh what a crapy exp with vista ....

step1 del infcache.1 ( make sure u has permissions on the file first)
step2 remove every single usb device you have physically and in dev manager
step3 reboot
step4 plug in a generic Microsoft mouse - it installs the mouse and sees it as a HID compliant mouse
step5 plug in your moue ... now the system thinks your mouse is a MS HID compliant mouse

sigh i almost shot the poor laptop!!!!

BTW thanx for the help guys ... sometimes moaning to others keeps the crazy away ;)
