Help - Line (sync) speeds keep changing?!

So my line was upgraded on Monday from 4Mbps to 10Mbps (per my request last week) and ever since the upgrade I've been having endless problems.

On Monday afternoon, according to my router I was syncing at 10Mbps while the attainable rate was 12Mbps. I first that that all was good and then at around 17:30 my connection dropped badly.

My child was watching a show on Netflix and suddenly the picture quality goes to hell and then Netflix pops up with an error saying I must check my internet connection. I attempt a bit of browsing and so forth and try to access speedtest but my connection has basically gone to hell in a handbasket. I first try a hard reset of the router, but nothing. Then try another ADSL account (from a different ISP) but the issue remains.

Upon checking my router (2750U) I see the line is syncing at 6Mbps for some reason. I reset the thing and when I check again I see it's syncing at 10Mbps again however the state of my connection hasn't changed...still borked.

So after some time fiddling, resetting, switching accounts to no avail I noticed that my router was re-syncing on it's own. I then checked the stats page on the router and saw it was synced at 7Mbps.

I originally posted in THIS thread because I thought it was ASSIA that was causing me headaches but according to another forum member, my router stats indicate that ASSIA is not enabled for my line?

Tonight I was having more problems...random automatic re-sync's ranging from 6Mbps and 7Mbps right down to 3Mbps:

My router re-synced again while I was typing this post and I'm now sitting at 5Mbps:

All this is happening on a "supposed" 10Mbps line which I'm being billed for while it seemingly can't do 10Mbps.

This is frustrating as hell and Netflix is pretty much useless to me right now due to this nonsense.

Anyone have an idea whats going on here? I'll ask Telkom to recreate my port tomorrow and see if that helps but at this stage I'm regretting this upgrade. For years my 4Mbps line was running rock solid but all that this upgrade has done is give me problems.

Your SNR is all over the place .
If you put a phone on the line is there a crackling noise ?
Move it back to 4 meg , i have no problems with netflix on 4 meg .
Could also be a problem with the MSAN you are on .
I see adsl-2 on the first two then G-dmt on the last screen , strange .

Thank for the replay FNfal.

After all the re-sync's I had I unselected the "ADSL 2+" (to see if would help) in the ADSL settings which is why it shows G-dmt on the last screenshot.

Unfortunately I don't have a phone to connect to the line...will check to see if a mate has one.

Yeah looks like I'll have to drop it down again because my line is horribly unstable atm.
I've also sent TelkomZA a PM to ask his assistance but he hasn't replied yet.

Phone Telkom drop it to 8mb/s if it doesn't hold there 4mb/s is the best you can do unless you can get Telkom uncapped LTE.

Noted. Thanks.

It just irks me that they're quick to tell me "yes sir you can definitely upgrade to 10Mbps!!" when in reality that's not really the case...but that's Telkom for you I guess.

It's always been a bit of a Catch 22 as Telkom says "up to 10Mbps". I was on 8Mbps for a long time until the exchange upgrades two years ago moved me to the full 10Mbps.

Hold thumbs TelkomZA can get you sorted, I've seen them work miracles in the past :)

I'd be more than happy if I could get a 8Mbps as long as it's stable.

Keep in mind when you switch to a 10mb profile the exchange will push out at a higher frequency on your line to achieve your speed, if the copper quality is poor or have to many joins, upgrading will cause issues that's why your 4mb worked fine and 10mb doesn't, it could also be that your exchange/mini dslam cant handle 10mb yet,. cut your loses and move back to 4mb. I upgraded and downgraded twice because of this issue :(..unless you can get telkom to replace the copper cable(good luck with that :P)

^^ Yeah looks like I'm gonna have to drop back down.

I managed to speak to one of the call center agents this morning and explained my problem to him. He mentioned that my exchange is apparently scheduled for maintenance next week (9th and 10th) because according to his system there have been numerous other ADSL complaints in my area. He then recreated my port and said I must test when I get home.

He suggested that I perhaps wait until after the maintenance before downgrading my line because maybe things will improve however I doubt I'll be able to wait that long. His port reset/recreate somehow seems to have made my problem worse! The entire afternoon my connection has been dropping every 10 minutes or so. Router doesn't appear to lose sync but the internet light on my router just goes dead and then all goes to hell. I'm having to reset my router almost every 10 minutes to get some form of connectivity.

Come Monday I'll have to ask them to bring it down because I can't carry on like this.

Just an update, I called Telkom this morning and asked them to downgrade my line to 8Mbps...will see what happens when they're done.

BTW, after scouring some of the other threads here I discovered that apparently my router displays the SNR and Attenution stats in 0,1 dB increments (I didn't know this).

My router stats atm:

SNR Margin (dB) - 5,6
Attenuation (dB) - 29
Power (dBM) - 200
Att Rate (Kbps) 7296
Rate (Kbps) 6976

According to this thread, my attenuation is "excellent" however it's the SNR Margin that's clearly the culprit; it's way too low.
