Hey Everyone

I am currently looking at getting a new compact digital cam but don't know which one to take.

Budget is about 3-4k so anything falling in-between there i'll have a look at.

I am deciding between the Canon Ixus 110 IS , Ixus 100 IS, and Ixus 95 IS.

The cam must be able to take some decent night shots and very responsive.

Anyone have any models in mind please enlighten me.

Thanks

Quality high ISO is not realistic on today's point and shoot cameras. (If you can utilise a tripod you're halfway there but then you're going to need to make sure your subjects arent moving either.)

That said I've always been partial to Canon P&S even if my most recent P&S purchase was a Nikon.

I looked at those cameras quickly, but I'm not all too clued up on the latest P&Ss.

Couple of things to consider tho:

Do you need 12 MP? What do you plan to do with your photos, view on screen or print? I would personally not buy a point and shoot at 12 mp, I'd go for the lowest MP i can get. For viewing on screen that is. The reason not being price, but the small sensor.

Also, get manual control, or at least Aperture priority. There are going to be times you will want to use it. Another consideration should be controls, try and get a camera with wheels for quickly adjusting settings (i'm not sure which compacts have this, but some of the canon bridge cameras and the G series has it). Wheels aren't crucial but make things easier.

And you're on the right path with IS. saves you having to up the ISO.

Haven't looked at them for a while, but Canon is great. Get wide-angle if you can - I have the Ixus 860 and the w-a is fantastic!

They all have IS. Doubt whether any has shutter/aperture control. 12MP is a waste - probably has the same sensor as my 8MP.

What kind of nightshots are you going to take? IS helps for static scenes and just general hand held, but if you are taking pics of people its not going to help the motion blur.

For myself I would like to have a a bridge camera with a hotshoe so that I can stick the new canon 270ex flash on it to do bounce flash indoors. That way I can also use lower ISO and get a better quality pic.

Edit: Probably doesn't fall into the 'Compact' category...

Why would he want to buy a D10? Unless he wants to scuba or likes fugly camera's.

Or did you mean G10? Not that it is a true a compact.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I am not too bothered by the mp but seeing as i want a newish model with some of the newest features it looks like all of these come with 10-12 mp's so ya.

I did have a ixus 850 is but that got lost over the seas, i am familiar with the canon menus and have a couple of sd cards lying around already so it would be easier to go with a camera that uses sd cards instead of something like the sony cards.

Although saying that i am also liking the Sony W290, i guess it will be between the W290 and the Ixus 100 IS, i also have a 40D but am tired of lugging the thing around to parties and when going on holidays abroad. My parents lost their 10D abroad so thats why i'm sourcing a p&s as they don't want to take the 40D.

Any other models and brands will be appreciated.

Thanks

Ok so i decided on a Canon Ixus 100 IS Black. Ordered yesterday from SA Camera, also took a Lowepro Rezo 15 camera pouch and a Sandisk Ultra ll 4gb sdhc memory card.

I have been reading many reviews and hopefully i made the right choice.
