Hi all, i have 2 option, basically i will be using the machine for solidworks 3D CAD as well a a little bit of gaming, nothing serious.

Option 1

XPS 17 $1851

"Intel Core i7-2760QM (2.4GHz, 6 MB L2 cache, 4 cores)"
6GB PC3
750GB SATA
"1GB nVidia Geforce GT550M"
DVD-RW

Option 2

Inspiron N5720 $1282

"Intel Core i7-3612QM (2.1GHz, 6 MB L2 cache, 4 cores)"
8GB PC3
1TB SATA
1GB nVidia Geforce GT630M
DVD-RW

What will i achieve with the more expensive one?

At those stats, the Inspiron looks good. I have the XPS L502X.

Pro's:
- Very good audio (if you don't use headphones, the tiny woofer is awesome when considering traditional laptop audio).

Cons:
- Only HDMI out... so I cannot connect to an old school video projector or monitor... must either use a converter to DVI (which doesn't seem to work) or connect to an HDMI display.

Other than that I love it.

Don't know the Inspiron very well... does it come with those silly clip off back covers? If so, i'm not sure how good they are, but they looked pretty easy to accidentally clip off, so I stayed away from Inspiron when I got this puppy.

At that price difference, I'd be leaning to the Inspiron.

I've had a Dell Studio for the past 2 years and wouldn't recommend getting one. Great specs, but the air outlet is obscured by the screen when open, resulting in constant overheating. I've also had endless screen issues with it.

What do you recommend? I need to get it through pinnacle micro.

Take the Dell 5720, add the optional 32GBSSD. Solid laptop, though its a bit chunky.

I have a Studio 1749 - and its been fantastic. Never overheated. I cracked my screen myself and dell replaced it the next day - didnt charge me a call-out-fee because it was under warranty. Insurance paid for the screen.

Dell is the best choice for laptops out! They just give excellent service!

The Inspiron sounds great! But it depends. I prefer the look of the XPS so if you can take the looks of the Inspirion go for it!

What is the most you are willing to spend?

Also, if you say light gaming, do you mean like older fps, strategy or do you mean like solitaire, super cow, farm frenzy, or do you mean the latest cod/flight sims?

i dont really wanna spend more than 15k

games like flight sim, cod, but i dont need to play at the best fps. not a serious gamer, but enjoy it.

there was also a nice sony vaio s serries.

If you are going to use it for Solidworks then wouldn't the Precision M4600 / M6600 be better? These are listed on the DS website as being on the approved hardware list.
