Looking to spend no more than R4000. Must be a Windows one. I'll be using it for browsing, e-mail, instant messaging and various other non-graphics based applications. I hope I'm right in thinking it can handle this?

I went to Incredible connection & Computer Mania this morning to shop around, but each one says, obviously, that the brand they stock is 'definately the best'. I see ShopAndShip has the MiniNote for R3760 which seems really good.

What do you guys say?

Well firstly vista isn't an option for netbooks.

I'd also google for reviews. When it comes to such devices keyboard layout is actually an important factor.

I don't want Vista, and I have checked out some reviews, but I'd prefer to hear it from this forum.

At a glance the HP looks quite good, but I just have a problem with the CPU used. The VIA C7 has 128kb L2 cache vs. the 512kb cache of the 1.6GHz Intel Atom. The C7 has a 800MHz FSB, though (as opposed to 533MHz of the Atom).

Luckily Windows 7 is though. :) I'm running it on a AAO and all things considered - ie it's windows  - not too bad.

Yeah, the Atom seems to be the standatd with pretty much all the other netbooks. Big difference though?

I'm not sure on that one. Will have to find a few reviews comparing a VIA C7 and Atom 1.6GHz head-to-head.

I got to play with a Lenovo thinkpad the other day (I know someone that bought one). I haven't touched any other netbooks (so I speak with little authority), but this one was pretty good. Runs win XP (I think windows 7 would do well on it).

Specs:
Usual tiny screen running at 1024 x 568 (i think 568).
Win XP
1GB RAM (was using 280MB with no apps open)
Intel Atom

Impressions:
I want one. It was fast and responsive. The display size was a little small (i'm used to a 17" @ 1920 x 1200), but for a pick up and go notebook it's perfect. Also, the battery was on 38% and it still had nearly 2.5 hrs estimated time remaining.

Like I said, I don't know any other netbooks but for around 4K, this one impressed me.

I am typing this message with the red Lenovo s10e netbook you speak of.

I love this netbook, it is stylish, it works well, it's screen size may sometimes let you sigh, but the usefulness and portability will soon make you forget about the cons.

Make sure your retailer gives this netbook with a 6 cell, most netbooks come with 3 cell... ew

I actually think Lenovo does only come with a 6 cell, well I got a 6 cell, and it lasts me about 5 hours!

This is a dream, and I have no regrets.

If you have anything else you would like to know, don't hassle to ask me bud.

Oh, almost forgot, a lot of you are wondering... Lenovo s10e netbook supports windows 7.
And is apparently quite responsive on it too.

Awsome. Looks like I'm sold then, and at R4100 it's not too bad (with S&S). Anyone know of any cheaper (reliable) places?

Quite a few places (online)have the Lenovo S10 around or just under R4000 recently to make way for the newer S10.

I have one personally, got it overseas last Xmas. Would take the Samsung NC10 but it was not available at that time. Price difference not that much overseas but I saw some place advertise this (Samsung) at R7K+, Madness....

ew @ benq

ive worked on hp, msi and lenovo netbooks, decided to go for the lenovo, obviously.
