Hi Guys

I must admit that my knowledge regarding the topic is very basic so please keep it as noob friendly as possible.

Currently we have a telkom line with the "7pm-7am landline calls free" package. I would like to have wifi at my home so I need advise on the best and cheapest option to go with

In terms of requirement, it will be pretty basic. Some emails and maybe youtube but no gaming or heavy downloading or streaming.

Please recommend an ISP and package.

I think 10gb should be enough and I know that I will have to pay a line rental to telkom. I see axxess has a 10gb+10gb for R46.

1) Will there be any additional cost with telkom?
2) is the above axxess package the best?
3) will I be able to retain the "7pm-7am landline calls" free package?
4) in terms of a router, is buying it prepaid the best option?
5) recommend a router?
6) is the installation easy enough to do on my own?
7) any other suggestions.

Thank you for any and all advice

1. Yes you will either have to take a combo at axxess that will include a dsl line or activate the dsl line at telkom(R165 for 2meg line I think) or a faster line that cost more.). People recommend to keep your adsl line with telkom since its easier to handle.

2. youtube take up a lot of data. so its difficult to say I recommend test it out with a 1 month trail account from axxess after your line has been activated. To see your average usage per month first.

3. yes your land line is on its own

4. Not sure but I think so yes...

5. Maybe more experienced can help

6. Yes there is a good explanation here

7. Keep your line with telkom and ask for dsl activation first I've signed up for axxess 1mb uncapped combo package on friday and saw it can take upto 8 weeks to activate. I'm still waiting as we speak. Yes I know I signed up my dsl line with axxess since its a combo its abit cheaper.... To mention there is better ISP out there like crystalweb and Vox but for someone who can't afford to pay a lot or someone with basic needs axxess will be ok I guess.

For what you need the 10gb+10gb should be more than enough.
You can also try out their pre-paid 3GB and see if it is enough for the 1st month to be in a better position to know how much data you need.
I would also prefer you to activate your ADSL and leave it at Telkom so if you want to change ISP you only need to change router login and password and not wait for the line to be returned to Telkom92days) before you move it on to a new ISP if you want to take a bundle of line and data. Line and bundle is cheaper than leaving the line at Telkom but better when you want to move from ISP to ISP. With data prices coming down don't lock into any contract at current prices.
The 2mb line should be fast enough. In time Telkom could be upgrading the 2mb line to 4mb as they might be making the 4mb line the slowest available. I can watch sport about 99% of the time without waiting for bandwidth using a 2mb line.

For your needs rather take a Telkom all in one package.

Will be much simpler.

"best" and "cheapest" are mutually exclusive.

This comment pretty much sums up my experience with all goods and services.

Telkom is probably your safest option right now.

I agree here, Telkom all in one package will be the safest, can always change later if you feel something better has come out, but generally this will be the best option for your use case

And it's 'uncapped' from 00:00 to 07:00, everything is one application & one bill.

Thanks so much

I will go to a telkom store this weekend to discuss it. I hope I get a competent consultant.

Is there and package that I should be looking for? (router, line rental and data)
a link will be off great help

Thanks

I agree... but one can hope....

If you only need 10gb then you could try Afrihost mobile 5gb (R249) plus the double up data (R100) to get your 10gb. Once off router fee for R1099 Huawei E5730 which has wifi and lan ports.

-its alot easier to set up and less can go wrong.
-delivered to your door within a day.
-Just make sure you have decent 3g in your area and you'll connect at 7mbps+
-if you want faster inet and have LTE in your area go for the Huawei B593 R1999 and you will connect at really fast speeds.
-The wifi routers have batteries so you can take your inet to work or on holiday.
-You can upgrade, downgrade and topup your product easily.

People are gonna complain because I said afrihost but this is completely reliant on the MTN net work.
Just be careful if you watching youtube in HD 10gb will disappear in a few days.
