I need help choosing my LCD TV. I have about 12K to spend on a TV but with all the research I have done I am still clueless as to what set to choose.

I will be using it to watch tv & to play XBOX & PS3 games.

Which brands should I stay away from?

THe Samsung 40" series 5 is looking good to me, but I just don't know. A salesman at audiovision told me that plasma are better for TV & offer better lifespan, but he was pushing the older sets at me so I didn't pay him much attention after that.

What other 40" LCD would you recommend in the same price range as the samsung?

Help:confused::confused:

If you can get one- A Sharp AQUOS.

You cant go that wrong with a 40" Sony S Full HD, or a Samsung 5 series.

I paid R11500 for a Bravia 40" V series, im very impressed...

I got the 40" Sony full HD at Makro for R12,999 and the only device that I have with an HD signal is the TViX 6500A media player which I've yet to try out on the Sony TV.
I often question myself whether there's a real need for full HD - just don't forsee myself using it much.

Many on here give the Sinotec very good ratings.

thanks for the quick replies, will definitely check out the tv's mentioned

@Frankie, while the Sinotec's offer an excellent guarantee, 5yrs I believe, they just don't look the same both aesthitically & when looking at picture quality. I looked at them displaying the same content at Game i think, not good for me I'm afraid.
LOL at your sig

I paid R11500 for a Bravia 32" W series, no sense in buying HD ready LCD's. Once you get one and start fooling around with the setting you will discover the deference between 1080i and 1080P. I have a LG DVD recorder that has HDMI output. Spend the extra money and get Full HD.

also have a look at dionwired in the new woodmead complex. They have some pretty awesome specials running. I just picked up a 37" LG, (HD READY - NOT FULL HD) for R7999.00

THey had pretty good pricing on the 40" TV's (all makes) as well

eish - difficult choice -

40" Sony full HD at Makro for R12,999 - Not a Bad deal at all!!
47 inch Sinotec full HD at Makro for R12999 - eish....

47 is a monster compared to 40 - i'd suggest look at what size room you have, if 40" is gonna be enough, get the samsung, else, the 47 hehe...

I got the 42" but the 47" is just so much bigger!

I dunno which I would take hehe, both great deals!

It looks like a toss up between the samsung 40" full HD or the sony V series 40".

Sinotec is off the cards for me. The only thing good they offer is the warranty i'm afraid
e.g. look at the 47" on sale for 12999, has 1500:1 contrast ratio & 1 hdmi port

What is the ratio between TV and gaming?

If it is more TV, I'd get a 720p (HD ready) plasma - most TV is still SD and looks much better on a 720p plasma than on a full HD LCD.

If it is mainly gaming, then I'd lean towards a Full HD LCD.

For me DSTV is really making the display choice difficult - if there were more HD channels then I'd consider full HD, but we still have mainly SD 4:3 broadcasts - what a joke!

I see Game have a special on a FULLHD 50" Samsung Plasma for R15,999

hey japan, I think we spoke to the same guy at AudioVision.... hehehe... he also wanted me to go for the sony 40", even gave me R2k off.... and insisted plasma is better... (wont mention his name here :) )

Get Full HD, DSTv is broadcasting more and more in full hd, and blu-ray has proven it will be around for a while (after facing off with HD-DVD)...

I am also leaning towards a Samsung 40" Full HD series 5, even though lots of sales people want me to go for the sony....... what are the differences in terms of connectivity (ie hdmi, av, etc....). Wanted to get a 42", but they dont make 42" in Full HD in samsung apparently.....

the deal from game also looks good, the 50" for R16k... mmm.......

I want to buy my screen in about a week or two, any more suggestions?????

DSTv is broadcasting in FULL HD?

I though they were only doing 720.

Yeh -they're only doing 720p - and on one channel - so I'm a bit confused by the statement : " DSTv is broadcasting more and more in full hd" - there's only one HD channel - and it can only broadcast a maximum of 24 hours in one day.
