I spent the better part of my afternoon going down a rabbit hole of info regarding mechanical keyboards.
So I know that I need a full sized keyboard based on the number crunching I do so I must have a proper number pad
But what throws me is the baffling choice of switches. Red/brown/ clear, speed.......
Where do you even start?

Best advice I could find was "Well it is all personal preference", which is all well and good, but how the heck am I going to try them all?

Side info if it helps -
I am not at all a gamer. I am a coder
I have no idea what I am looking for in terms of clickyness, travel, sound etc.
I care about speed and accuracy.

Where you start in my opinion is what are your major requirements...
Gaming, typing? And then there's the noise factor. If you don't want a noisy keyboard, go for anything but a clicky switch.

Brown is a good hybrid... Good for typing but not as noisy as the red clicky ones. Black is good for gaming but require more effort to press do not the best for typing.

Thanks

That sums it up nicely..
Yup typing is my priority so a blue or a brown is probably where I need to start looking.

Any good suggestion where one could go in joburg and try out as much as possible?

I don't know the answer to that unfortunately. I got mine on Amazon. I'll defer to the Gautengers among us.

You're kind of going to have to see reviews and see what they like /hate.

As a software dev, do you like longer or shorter key travel?

You'd probably want something like cherry brown. Or equivalent, or you could want low profile which right now would pretty much only be Logitech's ones.

Budget is important as you're looking at around 2-3k for a quite decent mech keyboard, can't really go below R1k.

The keyboard would probably last you the next decade.
