Yesterday, on the 1st of May, 2009, I woke up at approximately 10:00 AM to find that my entire 3 gigabytes of allocated bandwidth on my iBurst account had already been "used". I phoned the tech support and they told me they could give me more information the next day when their bandwidth information had come through.

Sure that they would realise their mistake and give me my 3 gigabytes back the next day, I bought an additional gig for the meantime. I get a phone call from Kenneth today saying I DID in fact use the 3 gigs, insinuating I am a liar, and they have just pulled a report from the live server to prove it. Ladies and gentlemen, on the 1st of May, 2009, I woke up at 10:00 AM to find my bandwidth supposedly "used" and made a call 27 minutes later. Put yourself in my shoes, why would I leave a download going from midnight and use all of my allocated bandwidth within the first day, why would I do that? I can't think of an answer to that question and that's because there isn't one and that's because I didn't.

One possible reason for this: last month, after I was capped, I found I could download at full speed for a day for some some reason. Could they have possibly carried this usage over to the previous month just to spite me for their own mistake? I am not on PPU, I am 3gig Pro subscriber.

My question is: where do I go from here? Do I actually have to physically confront the regional manager of iBurst to get my R500/3gigs back?

So you knew that you were not supposed to be able to download, but took advantage of your ISP's error? Like stealing?

And now you are unhappy that you have to pay?

Did you reset your modem before mid night end of last month or did you leave it connected?

You only have one choice if you want to take it further and that is to open up a case of theft against IBurst.
This will enable you to get a court order to have IBurst provide that report to you.

Once you have the report, you can prove the case, and get IBurst to refund the unused bandwidth and pay for your legal fee's.

Of course, getting from Reporting the Case to The Court Order is a nightmare.

It is highly unlikely that any kind of system error on iBurst's side would have affected only you. You can query it with pleasure - if you throw a big enough stink they might even get someone senior to review your usage. Most likely outcome: You will end up with egg on your face when they prove via multiple methods that your modem did in fact transfer the amount of data that it did.

I assume from your comments that - while you may not have been in front of your PC during the time in question - it was in fact on and could have been downloading updates, logged into a high bandwidth services, participating in a botnet, virus infected or any number of other possibilities.

Truth be told it DOESN'T affect only him. Last month scores of users were complaining about incorrect usage amounts - usually AGAINST the users favour. Additionally I have 3 friends on iburst who all report the same problems, even monitoring my own bandwidth (which is NOT shared) shows that either iburst have no idea how many megs are in a gig or their software is bugged of note. (Which it actually is considering the regularity one finds themselves unthrottled)

I brought this up with a tech support rep yesterday (after some nonsense whereby they suspended my account, refuse to reactivate it but are still nice enough to be charging my account) and was yelled at for my insight. They of course say they can prove otherwise, I tell them their excel spreadsheets are rubbish and they counter it with a technician visit offer that I'd have to pay if he decided I was at fault.

Now I AM a network technician so not only do I not need someone else in the same position to verify that iburst are full of crap but chances are someone who works for their company would say I'm at fault anyhow just so I foot the bill and he gains some company grace.

Ah well.....end rant I suppose.

Case and point is there is a fault in their bandwidth monitoring system - they're just so full of it that getting them to acknowledge it will be a miracle in itself.

happens to me too. i don't get it taken off my bandwith the next month though.

The best thing to do is to make a huge stink at iWorst and give the company the boot the first opportunity you get.

Hiya

When I WAS with iBust... it would happen too from time to time... a chunk of bandwidth would just vanish around the end of the month. Querying it resulted in nothing but excel type logs that were inconclusive. I resorted to actually disconnecting my modem from 11pm to 1am at month's end... in case they did indeed carry over previous month's usage.

And then I managed to find away around the softcap restrictions... and it didn't matter anymore what they said my usage was... it was the only thing that helped with all iBust's other annoyances and woe. I kept the usage below 30GB a month and was never bothered by them.

Until their service became so incredibly K@K that I moved to ADSL... never looked back and do not miss them at all. I even spend the R70 top-up when needed!

So, yes, query it indeed. It will get you no real results and you will probably have to just accept whatever they deem the outcome to be. Good luck!~

P.S. I will NOT be divulging my softcap bypass here at all. I have shared this with my brother and a few others... it is working and they all want it to remain as such. The quickest way to screw this up is to begin talking all-and-sundry through the process. Sorry, but not negotiable... no PM's asking for this will be responded to...

I had a similar issue this month too, although not nearly on a 3 GB loss. I ended the month (i.e. disconnected in the early hours of 1 May) with 6.2 GB bandwidth remaining. I'm on a 5 GB package, but I travel to the UK for about 6-8 weeks twice a year, so I keep a lot of rollover. I should therefore have had 5 GB bandwidth remaining plus an additional 5 GB of new bandwidth when I reconnected later that day. Except I had only 9.6 GB. I'd love to know where those 400-something MB of bandwidth went.

I had the same issue about 2 years back, when 300 MB of data had mysteriously vanished in the night. This was when I was still on a 1 GB data package, so it was a big deal. I contacted tech support, who basically said 'NO U DID LOL', and that was that. Pro service there, iBurst. Wow.

Morning all.

Should you want a more detailed report of your usage please drop me a mail requesting such and please include a user name.

Thank you

Cancel ibust, get Neotel or ADSL. Screw them, if they don't want your money, go spend it somewhere else.

What about updates?
I had a freshly installed vista pc, left it connected, woke up on the 1st and it had updated, whole 500 megs GONE! LOL.

1GB and lower is clearly not an option for us these days lol. 3GB seems to be a sweet spot for an entry level if you want to keep your pc secure and still have full speeds for the above-average user.

My 1 Gig iBurst account (all I can afford lol) lasts me 7 days... (If I use it VERY sparingly). I need at least 10 gigs a month, and this is Internet for 2 people.

iBurst Bandwidth Missing

I think this is pushing it now. I have a 1Gig cap on my iburst account which is enough for me to just send and receive emails and get onto facebook now and then and chat.

This month well as of the 2nd of May I apparently used up 784.48 MB of data while my pc was off.

The einstones at iburst tell me it was used by me. how in the world can facebook or text emails amount to 784.48 MB in one day. As for all the other iburst know it all's here who share their experiences here of how it works well... get a life. The reason you are not complaining is simply because you have had no issues thus far.

They are simply taking us for granted because we are complaining as individuals. We need to take a stand together and put them in their rightful incompetent places.

Please reply to this post if you wish to join me in taking this up to them as a group.

Problem is, iburst has got us all by the balls!
Some of us are not fortunate enough to be blessed with telskum lines, so no ADSL.
HSDPA is a total rip-off. And when it comes to Neotel... huh! well!!! Anyone with half a brain knows to NEVER... EVER... take out a contract with ANY ISP.
