Help me pick a laptop

Try Hifi corp samsumg R522 Dual core 2ghz 3 gig memory windows 7 R6K.
It is a winner

i would have suggested a netbook, but these too requirements do not work:

Core2Duo cpu, but is it worth the cash over a slightly older Core Duo?
DVD writer would come in handy, no need for blue tooth really.

Still though, if you only using the pc for the net and the odd word document etc - keep it in mind. I am loving my netbook, hardly use the full size one. Only reason i use it is cause its company provided, so have to do my work on it.

Depending on what you specifically using it for, if your primary objectives would be carrying it around ofr notetaking at lectures etc - then I would suggest something portable, light etc - maybe a netbook or one of those which you can use to buy ebooks and read directly. I have a HP5101 - with 320GB space, 2GB ram, etc etc and with vista. I got my from overseas and paid the equivalent of R4800.

 What on earth are you talking about?
The one online store, "The notebook company", list their prices like that for some reason.

R6k? When? That model (with 2gigs of RAM though I think) is going for R6800 on laptop direct. If I could get that laptop for R6k now I would be tempted to buy it this week.

They run on intel atom processors though, and since I plan on having this last me 4 years, I need to go with a more powerful (core duo/core2 duo).

That is their system of classifying the state of their second hand laptops afaik. They also rent out laptops so they have lots of 2nd hands.

You'd be looking at the retail column. i.e. not 2nd hand.

I just thought of something...

Would you recommend buying a laptop online from say a US store or English store, shipping it to my cousin or uncle in those respective countries, and then have them post it to me? Is it safe? And how does it affect the guarantee?

Because I just realised a laptop that costs R6500 here, costs the equivalent of R4800 in the UK

Personally I wouldn't post it, rather wait for someone to travel. You'd probably have to mark it as fragile & that would cost extra.

Laptops are quite a bit cheaper overseas though. US probably a bit more so than EU. My sister just bought a laptop in Europe and I guess she saved maybe 2k or so versus buying the same thing here.

Buying can be a bit tricky though. If you try shipping to a place other than the registered home of the credit card holder then some retailers block it. Make sense but annoying.

Do watch out what version of the OS you get, i.e. you need US English. Cause they different translations are not always compatible even though they should be. .dll clashes etc

Thanx for clearing that up.
Yeah, sorry for not understanding your question immediately.

Its not that I know I could get it for cheaper, its that I could get something better for the same price (if that makes sense). No one though is coming to SA though anytime soon...

Maybe its just best to settle with what I can get here.

How does this deal look?

HP reviews

56.5%: Such a bad rating is rare. There exist hardly any notebooks, which are rated worse.

A little off putting to say the least...

Anyway, maybe I should look at another option. What though?
Anyone got specific models that they can vouch for?

Dell Latitude D series D830 -- not the latest but I am happy with mine

No problems -- but then I can pretty much upgrade and fix anything on it myself & what I cannot do I have a friend that can.

After-Sales can be problematic if you do not have a big account and an account manager.

See if you can rent a couple different models for a couple of days and see how you feel.

Look on Google for Reviews -- read as many as you can.

I have found two that interest me:

Dell (thanks to MW) vostro 1015 and the samsung R522 (recommended earlier). The vostro seems good and costs +-R6k while the samsung also seems good but comes it at R6800 (which is more than I actually want to spend although an earlier posters says that he/she got it for R6k at hi-fi corp).

The only thing bothering me with the dell is the windows upgrade. It comes with vista business which means I should be able to upgrade to windows 7 pro free of charge. No problem. But why is dell the only manufacturer whos program ends on 31 december for the free upgrades? All the others run until 31 January. I dont wanna spend R6k in Jan and then have to pay another R1500 later to get windows 7. The samsung by contrast comes with windows 7, but even if it didnt, you could upgrade for free so long as it is purchased before 31 January
