Hello,

I have a Lenovo Think center standing around, I want to make it do soemthing whilst being headless ( no screen, no keyboard, no mouse just a internet connection)

I tired doing the web server thing but failed since the dynamic dns stuff beat me.

So does anyone have any handy guides what I can make this badboy do for me? To give it a purpose again.

Specs:

3.9Ghz core 2 due
4GB DDR2 800mhz Ram
Lot's of hardrives ( 1 x 128GB SSD 1 x 500GB 2 x 1Tb )
Current OS - Ubuntu Desktop

However I'm all for installing something different if need be.

Speak to me, I'm a noob I want to start learning.

Media server is a very broad word for my tiny mind

Thor why don't you just give it to me?

Why do you have so much hardware standing around?

Just put teamviewer on it and your normal pc and you can do whatever you like on it.
Can even then control it from a phone or tablet and use it to easily play PC games on your other devices :P

No mr Vaughan! I have been a windows slave all my life, windows servers I know like the tip of my .... finger.

I want to learn linux badly, but have no idea where to start, like I don't think I fully comprehend the fundamental design of anything other than windows.

Initially in a other thread of mine I wanted to run my own web server off it, but the IP and dynamics and stuff just got to much and it never worked so I gave that idea up, now I have this piece of machine and I would just like to give it some use surely this PC can do just about anything all these HP microservers can do if not more.

So I'd like to know what folks here use their servers for and then also guide me how to do the same.

I think maybe you should start here...

Get the fundamentals and then you can carry on.

It's hard to learn otherwise unless it's "in service".

I enrolled in this course having some familiarity with Linux but not much. Like many others I had high hopes for this course. This course consists of just under 20 "chapters" covering the various aspects of Linux. However calling them chapters is a stretch. They could each probably be fit on less than 2 pages of paper. After going through the first few chapters I realized this course was very simple and almost unnecessary. For example, they had multiple videos on how to change the desktop background. (Hint: It's basically the same process as a windows computer.) The only graded work in the whole MOOC is the 30 question final exam. After the 4th "chapter" I decided to just skip to the exam because I couldn't stand the course. I passed rather easily despite not knowing anything about Linux servers or bash scripting. Overall I am disappointed in the course. I was expecting it to be challenging and much more in-depth. (That' not to say you wouldn't learn anything from it if you do take it.) In addition given that the verified certificate is $250, it appears that this course is more about making money than really teaching people. I am somewhat disappointed in edX for even offering it given their normal standard for a course.

That made me a bit negative towards it so even If I do take it my mindset wont be positive knowing it's not the ideal way to learn.

Set it up as a file server under Linux of FreeNAS. Then use it to automate the backups of the other machines in the household. You can never have too many backups.
