I have quite a few passwords and I have like 3 or 4 different ones that I use all over the web.

I want to make sure they are more secure, but it's also a mission to look them up on my document whenever I need to login.

Is using a password manager app a good idea?

I use keeppass portable so I can copy it to a usb flash drive and keep a copy on my laptop as well.

+1 for KeePass.

I also try to use pass phrases instead of passwords (where possible). For instance: "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" instead of "Quick_1234". According to https://howsecureismypassword.net/ the above phrase:

It would take a desktop PC about
318 novemdecillion years
to crack your password

versus the normal password above:

It would take a desktop PC about
58 years
to crack your password

It is just easier to remember a phrase as well.

I use lastpass on my pc... perfect. pity the android app is subscription based :(

I have one main password that I use everywhere, but I use slightly different variations of it on each site, so if one variation doesnt work then the next will.

I have a lot of long and very complicated passwords, so I also use Keepass, works great.

I also do a lot of password cracking, so the best tip I can give you for creating passwords it to use completely randomly generated passwords, no phrases, no words, no specific number like the years ie 1985 blah blah. There mutation rule sets that take all those sort of things into account.

I use a phrase, quite a long one and include the name of the website (slightly adapted according to my rules) for each site.
So, for example, my phrase might be "C4_is_a_good_little_mybroadband_cat_meow" and "C4_is_a_good_little_gmail_cat_meow"
plus I have my own internal rule set for which letters should be replaced with numbers or symbols.
I don't honestly know how secure or insecure this strategy is but it means the passphrase for each site is different but they are all easy to remember.

A password app is probably a good idea though, might try one myself

When available I use 2-step authentication as well

Apple's iCloud password thingy. Works well across all my devices.

I use 1Password. Not cheap. But the keychain syncs with your Dropbox so you can access your passwords anytime anyplace. It also generates random passwords and you can fill username and password fields with the click of your mouse.

I have a combination of letters and numbers which I incorporate with each website - so each website's password is different, but easy for me to remember. If one get's compromised for whatever reason, the others are all unique.

+1 for using phrases though. Very effective.

I use Lastpass. Enable 2 factor authentication where possible.
