So here is the issue we got married 18 months ago just got back in the country then so bought a small car (Kia Picanto) new with maintenance plan etc as my wife travelled a lot at the time and I wanted her to have a reliable car.

Fast forward to now and she is 6 months pregnant the Picanto is too small for the 2 of us and the baby and accompanying stuff. (I drive a paid off geloppie to work and back).

So now we need bigger wheels but I still owe quite a bit on the Picanto (Did not have deposit).

Does anyone know of nice deals with some "trade assistance" or options like that? I would not like to spend more than around 5k per month. Happy to go newish second hand but new would be great.

There's 3 options:

1) Go to KIA and arrange a deal on the Cerato Hatch or new Soul - will work best with a little one and the luggage.
{You could get a great deal on the car but KIA is a bit 'nasty' towards trade ins}

2) Mazda have 2 nice options: Mazda 3 hatch or the CX-5 (my dad owns one, very nice), Mitsubishi ASX, Nissan Qashqai or Juke - been looking at these myself. Your premium should be under R5k depending on the model you choose.

3) Hold on a bit. The baby is 2-3 months away and you really shouldn't drive around with a small baby (the Picanto do have ISOFIX points..) Many new parents go bananas when it comes to cars and babies. Get a compact stroller (there are many cool ones that fold up to the size of a loaf of bread and "deploy" using 1 hand), and make sure what you need - ask your mom and/or mother-in-law.
Rather upgrade your medical aid and wait for special toward the latter half of the year...

Sound advice...

Yeah the picanto has Isofix and it works great but with the baby seat in the passenger seat had to be moved almost right to the front and has to be upright so not very comfortable for the passenger but workable if need be. Haha I hear you one want everything perfect!

Sad to hear Kia are not so good when it comes to trade ins... will have to see.

Not sure about deals but a few cars come to mind.

Honda Jazz
Honda Civic

The Jazz is more versatile when it comes to loading up stuff while remaining a smaller car.

The Civic is larger and more expensive but also has a bigger boot, but you can't vertically stack it like the Jazz.

I bought a Golf GTI because it was the sportiest car that had 4-doors and a big boot which is also a decent automatic. However I do find putting the pram in the boot sideways is never 100% flat...so therefore I would recommend buy the pram first and go fit it to the cars you have a look at.

And if I can recommend something else...don't buy a pram that take a baby seat. They are monstrous in size and you'll use it once or twice before realizing the supposed "mobility" is an illusion and then you'll either never use it again and carry the baby or simply not go out.

Deal with the first 4-6 months without a pram and then buy a much cheaper and infinitely more practical "stroller" instead, which you'll probably find you never really use either.

That is one moerse loaf of bread.

But as I said above I agree completely, skip the entire "pram" business and go straight to a cheap stroller.

Don't burn your money on this *** which you'll never use. Unless you are one of those people who hang around the mall permanently it's utterly pointless.

You'll be surprised by trade-ins so don't assume where you will or won't get a good one.

I traded in a ****ty Fiat Palio at SMG (BMW) and got more for it than I had advertised it for on Gumtree.

Also don't panic about ISOFIX. It costs a fortune and is hard to find across the ranges. At the odds of being crucified for this...go buy a second hand one off gumtree for next to nothing. You are going to use it for six months max before you need to buy a regular size seat which you can buy new for under a grand.

Ignore all that bull**** about metal fatigue and simply check the foam yourself. Rather a safer car than a worry about a second hand car seat. After all a brand new one could also just break, there is no way for you to know if it will or not.

I got one of those double prams when my 2nd was born. I find myself pushing an empty double pram most of the time.

I bought a small Mclaren Stroller from Reggies for about R599 when my eldest daughter was born, 3 kids later and a good few cars as well pram still in top condition, why dont you look at a Ford Kuga not to big or too small.

So here is what I would do in your situation:
Sell the kid, divorce the wife and buy a motorcycle.

My son is 1 month old now, I went full cliché and got a Volvo XC70 wagon.

Must say as a family car it is rather good. Acres of space and the drive is silky smooth.
