Ok, so i am about to take the plunge and buy a new TV set, i planned to spend in the range of 4000-5000 for it, but anything less is a bonus, so i took a look at what Game has on special this week, and i saw these, any comments/suggestions?

  • Samsung 32" HD Ready LED (UA32EH4000) - R3799
  • Sony 32" Full HD LCD 50HZ (BRAVIA_KLV32C) - R3899
  • LG 32" HD Ready LED (32LV3300) - R3499
  • LG 32" Full HD LCD (32CS560) - R3699

And then lastly there is:
  • Sinotech 39" Full HD LCD (ST-39KC70) - R3899

I was thinking, like the above shows, of a 32", but just want to make sure that the TV room is big/small enough for it, it is a long room, but narrow, so the TV edge is about 2.5m - 3m

*edit - Forgot to mention, i dont have DSTV HD, just normal, and 99% of the content that i watch is SD, so not worried to much about the whole HDReady/Full HD.

Firstly you are not doing yourself any favours by testing at Game (unless you have a really bright TV room).

43" plasma at R5k is exactly suited for your requirements. Can you not fit 43"? 32" LCDs won't do such a bad job for SD due to their smaller size, but you just can't compare to specifically 43" plasma with its 1024x768 (4:3 like SD) wide screen HD Ready 720p resolution. You get the best of both worlds, SD and HD. The Samsung LA32C550 and LA32D550 FHD LCDs have been leaders in their entry class, so you should add that to the list.

Regarding viewing distance, it depends, but for FHD it's recommended to sit 1 - 1.5m from a 32". 3m is a fairly long viewing distance, size would be important for me. The bigger the better and you will soon get used to the size you buy and only wish you got bigger. People sitting 2m buy 50" TV's so you have nothing to worry about besides the interior decor vibe. ;)

Plasma Need I say more its the best I have had all 2 and plasma is so much better.

works better with DSTV SD channels..
Best remedy for poor quality SD is to move to (digital) HD. Broadcast TV is the last thing holding one back in the SD world, most others applications are readily available in HD (mostly FHD) e.g. game consoles, PC games/vid files, Bluray etc.

Hopefully with the launch of IntelSat-20, MC will give us a few more HD channels so the necessity to watch dismal SD can be kept to a minimum.

I agree, a lot of the SD channels are really pathetic. Picture and sound is terrible. I find that the wife and kids have to turn up the volume on the amp to hear properly, and when I come and use the Boxee or BL player without checking the volume I just about get blown out the door...
