Ok...long story short, a friend of mine has lost the car key and immobilizer of her Corsa Lite(1.3, '96 model), along with her drivers licence, last week. She doesn't have a spare key and immob. She wants to know:
1. how much will it cost her to get a new key and immobilizer from either Opel or GM?
2. Is it possible to have the car key cut by a locksmith? Cost?
3. Is it possible to have the ignition and immobilizer replaced by aftermarket ones? Cost?
Which of the above options is best? Are there any other better options?
Thanx in advance.

Oh and she lives in Jane Furse(Limpopo). The closest town to her is Groblersdal, but she can also go to Polokwane(Pietersburg) if she has to.

Should have thought of this when she lost the first set.

No idea on corsa, I had to replace the whole lock set on an UNO a while back though, cost me around R500 DIY.

Well she only got one set of keys when the car was given to her.
R500 for the whole lock set DIY. So I'm assuming it might cost around R700+ to get the set and have it fitted for her. Thanx for the info.

If you don't have an original key, I'm not sure anyone will be able to cut you a new one, locksmith or GM.
Both Locksmith and GM should be able to redo the imobilizer chip, locksmith will probably be slightly cheaper. A friend quoted around R600-R700 for a new key and coding at a locksmith.

You will most likely have to get the ignition barrel, and possibly immobilizer replaced. This may be the best, as you'll probably get two keys with the set. No idea what it will cost though.

Ok. So can I, for instance, get a 3rd party ignition barrel fitted and then have the immobilizer unit re-coded by a locksmith? Will a new "hand-held" immobilizer be provided?

What kind of immobilizer does the car currently have? Is it part of the alarm system in that you have a remote that you push a button, or was it a chip in the key itself?

If she enjoys comprehensive insurance, hopefully, she will be able to claim for the keys with a lower than her normal excess if through a reputable insurer.
The average cover should be between R2500 - R5000 with a excess between a flat R250 / R500 or perhaps a 10% of claim could apply with these minimums.

Hope she has insurance.

Nope, its a small black thing, which has 3 goldish conductor pins at the front, that you have to stick into a small socket next to the ignition for a couple of seconds before starting the car. Without it the car won't start.

Ok, I'm not sure what the normal process is with those, whether it's stock or aftermarket. Best bet would be to check with an auto-electrician/GM/locksmith. They may be able to make up a new one, and then you can just replace the barrel for the key. GM may be able to make up a key from you from the car's VIN number. Not sure what information they store from cars that old.

Best bet would be to give GM a call, find out the process and take it from there.

Ok. I'll pop into a GM dealer in town after work and get some info from them. Thanx.
