help needed to choose 1st motorcyle

Hi all

I need some help choosing a beginner motorcycle. Got fed-up with traffic and bus strikes so plan is to buy a motorcycle for myself, and then use experience to buy one for my daughter in 1.5 years time when she turns 16.
Background - I live in Cape Town and drive ~25km into town each day (daughter will drive similar distance to Melkbosstrand).

All I spoke to said to stay away from chinese/unknowne brands, so currently on Honda. Options are:
1. Honda XR125L or 2. Honda Elite 125cc

Anyone have experience with either in terms of reliability, performance running costs etc.?

Hondas are legendary for reliability so you won't go wrong. 125cc is enough in town, but I wouldn't venture near a highway with it(even though are are legally allowed)
Make sure you get proper gear and get a learners licence at least.
