Hi everyone,

Urgent help needed please. I have a common setup at my office with a Dlink dsl2750u router(10.0.0.2) and an ADSL line from telkom(for a few laptops).
I also have another very common setup at a retail store with the same type of router(also 10.0.0.2) and it's own ADSL line m telkom(for two laptops) I have installed a 'fingerprint clockin' reader the staff at the store and assigned a static IP address to it (10.0.0.165) . How in the blazes will I get the 'fingerprint clockin' reader to connect the my office?
All settings on both routers are pretty much default except the user credentials of course.

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you

Use Hamachi Free to create a free Virtual Private Network.

1) Install the Hamachi free software on both computers. (Unmanaged mode)
https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/download.aspx
2) Create the new network.
3) Login to it from the other computer.
4) now you have access to the first computer.
5) Install your Fingerprint reader software and point it across the VPN to the other computer.

Gary,

Thank you for the advice, however, the fingerprint reader has a controller to communicate on the network, I am familiar with Hamachi and the workings thereof, but I don't think it will do the job in my case as the 'reader' is simply connected via CAT5 cable to one of the router ports at the store. The company that installed the hardware said we must now provide them with a WAN as they don't do it.(This request wasn't in the original contract scope). I would just like to add that the 'fingerprint reader' software is not installed 'locally' on the store laptop, but at my office on a standalone dedicated desktop.

Regards,

Regards,

Hmmm, I'd have to take a closer look at the setup to see what is going on.
Can you draw us a rough diagram and post it here?

The computer where the fingerprint reader software is installed at the office... is that connected to the Internet?
Can't you just log into it with TeamViewer?
How often are you wanting to access it?
Daily, weekly?
What kind of information are you wanting to get, just the daily logs?
Does the reader software not support e-mailing of logs?

The standalone PC at my office is connected to the internet yes. It has teamviewer installed yes. It runs a "scheduler" that keeps on reading all connected fingerprint readers and strips information to synchronize with the office database. The information required from the reader will be the staff's daily timesheets. No emails facility available, unfortunately.
Someone told me to just assign static IP address to the store router as well as connected hardware, disable DHCP on that router and it should work.....not sure it's that easy though.

Thank you again Gary.

Change IP range at one site, then you need to create a site to site VPN so that both sites can see each other.
I would either go with a managed MPLS network between the sites, or telkom has a cheap option for site to site VPN, up to 25 sites that you can manage yourself through a portal.

It will not work, as both subnets are the same (10.0.0.x/255.255.255.0)

You have to change either the one or the other, otherwise trying to use a VPN will not work.

Assuming that it's easier to change the office's IP range (assuming every device is using DHCP) you can just edit the settings on the router so that it will use 10.10.0.x/255.255.255.0 (as example).

Then you can install teamviewer at the retail store, and you should be able to teamview in.

If you're technically-minded, you can also use Windows7 as a PPTP VPN server, to allow you to VPN in.

But first you really should change the subnets, otherwise you'll get weird issues ;)

Managed VPN will be overkill for the OP.

Thank you for all the advice thus far gents, much appreciated. I will attempt changing the store router IP's and subnet to see what results I get.

No luck as yet guys. No one seems to be able to do or advise on this. What frustration.
