OK, first of all this is for a friend so no calling me a n00b :p

He has ADSL and a hub (which is also the modem). He plugs in the PC with a LAN cable (the blue one) to the hub. His settings are "Automatic IP address" etc and it works.

However his friend has laptop and he plugs it into the same hub but can't get internet access.

The workgroups are different BUT they can see (and swap) each others files so I'm not sure if it is that.

PS: The internet gateway is starts with 165.xx..xxx.xx. Arn't all south african IP addresses in the 192.X and 196.X range?
 
Sounds like the laptop is not configured to use the right gateway - the gateway ip address must be that of the adsl modem/router (normally 192.168.0.1). Also, you must enter the router's ip address in the dns server fields or use your isp's dns server ip's.

Or else...set his LAN connection on the laptop to acquire address automatically (DHCP), same for DNS.

The 192.X - 196.X range is a private class C block, and is not assigned to any country. It is reserved for internal LANs.

Check that the laptop is also setup with "Automatic IP address".

For two computers on the same network segment only an IP address and Subnet Mask is required for communication between the two.

For a computer to access hosts on another subnet (eg internet) a Default Gateway is also needed. Also make sure that the laptop is not configured with a custom default gateway setting that override the automatic setting.

You can also check that there are no Proxy server configured on the laptop.
 
If he is using an ISP on the saix backbone, ip will be 165... 192... is probably the ip address used on the LAN. As Azrael said, set LAN connection to aquire automatically, and the router should sort it all out for you.

What sort of router is it?

from what i can make out, the pc is using the adsl modem/router in bridged mode. he has a pppoe connection setup in the network connection setting on the pc. there are 2 ways to do this. the ip's you pickup via dhcp from the adsl router should be in the default range 10.0.0.1-10.0.0.255(telkom router)

1. the isp adsl account is allowed multiple logins. you configure the laptop with the same pppoe accounts on the laptop and connect via same adsl line.
2. you setup internet connection sharing on the pc and allow the laptop to use the pc's connection to internet.

Randomly assigned IP address of last resort .... if all other dynamic assignment mechanisms fail.
