Help new pc specs

The first game to take advantage of dual-core CPU's is Age of Empires 3 (to be released on 1 November 2005) so I would take a dual-core 3800+

Was not aware of this one. Things are moving faster than I was aware!! Need to start saving for my 4800+/5000+. Pitty I don't play AOE. Well either way you won't be dissapointed. Both are great CPU's and if things really start supporting dual core properly the 3800+ will fly.

I also mentioned the above, what is the PC going to be used for??

Sorry, I only read your second post with the quote. I somehow missed the first one. Must have been a Monday morning thing.

The problem is that all current and most future games for the next year at least will be slower. Personally, I do not think there is much point in planning further ahead than that for a gaming machine.

I think the X2 is a great chip for a server machine. For a games machine I am currently not so sure.

Well the 4800+ contains 2 4000+ cpu's so that makes sense :D .... for a price.

Well if AOE3 is already doing it, while won't more developers do it in the near future?

Yes, I am sure more game developers will start developing multi-threaded games as multicore CPU's becomes more common, so that they can make use of more than one core at a time. However, developing multi-threaded applications are more complex than single-threaded ones. I know, I have done a lot of multi-threaded stuff. Games are already very complex things to develop, so anything that adds extra complexity would be carefully considered.

Threading is great for spreading multiple independent processes accross multiple CPUs. So, if a server for example processes internet banking requests from multiple people, then spreading these requests over more CPU's on a server means that people gets answers faster than if all requests had to go through a single CPU. Also, since each thread gets a slice of a CPU, if one request is very long, e.g. getting a statement for a long period, it will not hold up other shorter requests that run in parallel.

However, if the threads depend on information from other threads, the threads can start slowing each other down. Foe example, if say each thread controls a bot, then the threads want to make sure that the bots do not run through each other etc and maybe make sure the bots work together. If a thread has to ask a bunch of other threads for bot positions, then that thread cannot do processing while waiting for replies. Also, if all threads depend on information from other threads at the same time, deadlocks can happen etc.

Threading also adds overhead on single CPU machines, due to a thing called context switching, so will often make threaded games slower on single CPU machines.

I also desire an X2 CPU, but however not for gaming.

does anybody have a link with concern to AOE3 needin dual cpu please?

It didn't say it needed a dual-CPU, simply the fact that it will use the capabilities of a dual-core CPU.

Just search on AOE3 Heaven Game forums for "Dual-core CPU" (to lazy to register) :p

Well the new Havock physics engine is gonna have multi core support. Was trying to make this machine scalable for the future, which is also why I wanted those DDR2 puppies in the MB (they have subsequently been shelved on advice).

On the side though, was at Rectron yesterday, they were assmebling a machine with Dual 7800GTX over SLi. That beast was worth over 24K. Suddenly I feel a little under speced!!!

Interestingly enough as well. The XBox 360 is gonna be packing 3 3.2GHz core. Guess that blow the "not for gaming" theory out the water.

I am not saying dual core is not for gaming. I am just saying at the moment one fast core is better than two slower cores for games as they stand at the moment, since current games and most of those released for the next while is designed to use a single core to its best potential. I fully expect the situation to be very different in two years time.

Buying a dual core chip now, for games coming out in two years time is a waste. It will just mean that your games run slower now and then in two years time you will in any case want a better multi-core CPU. ;)

Even though the PS3 and XBOX 360 are multi core systems some developers have been complaining about it. In general developers dont want to go multi threaded because it is a lot of work. John Carmack stated this aswell.

will the xbox 3 produce better looking graphics then say a 7800+ with a 4000+ amd
and 2 gig of corsair ram?

The PS3 will if developers decide to use the power. Look at what they did with Kill Zone 2.

sigh.. until i see a live recording of a PS3 showing me such graphical prowess i can only conclude for now that the clip was CG rendered... too much hype...
