help on buying a new work laptop

so the time has come to purchase my first new work laptop. since this is my first - I've now idea what is most suitable for my work. my old desktop was custom build for a particular cadcam software and was well match for the task and is still performing well after 7yrs.

got a budget of R14k max!

laptop function: cadcam software

powerfull cpu & graphics card (quadro) for cadcam software like solidworks / powermill 5axis / mastercam 5axis etc.

work presentations

long battery life

17" screen

back lit keyboard
wifi
usb
dvd player
good sound

any help would be appreciated

Any reason not to upgrade your current desktop?

I dont think a laptop would have the power to effectively render CAD stuff.

I don't think you can get a Quadro graphics card in a laptop for under R30k, rather go for a desktop as well as it will be more powerful for less money and won't throttle as easily due to heat etc.

For future proof I would get a laptop with a Geforce 10 series. New will be around R20K for a 17".
You will have to shop around the deals if you want to get your price.

Nothing great. Have you considered having a powerful desktop at home, use team viewer for workloads? Those colleges should have good net.

are you sure it the same model as we sold 97 units and have not seen a single one come back as a DOA or for RMA , normally we see that in the first or second week of selling an item with this item none so far on the 97 units sold

but even the best of the best laptops if they going to fail will always do in the 1st and 2nd week of purchase

He might be confusing it with the Y5070, mine has broken twice within 1.5 years, this time out of warranty. The Y700 is the new gen. PartServe is the worst thing about Lenovo.
I'd probably wait for Jan/Feb when the new GTX 1000's are more common in laptops and we hopefully see mobile AMD cards.

Yeah, the Y5070 is so good for its price though, the next one with the same specs is R22k+. It's just the flimsy screen that messes up everything. The Y700 uses a different screen and adds an extra bay with an SSD, sorting out the slow hybrid drive issue.

regrettably I can't wait till Jan/Feb as I need it for our first conference in early Jan 2017
