Can someone break down step by step what I would need to get skype? Also what are the prices like if I were to skype my family in Canada. Quality wise how is it? Is there a South African FAQ I can get?

Any help appreciated.

Step 1: Download Skype from www.Skype.com
Step 2: Install Skype and create a Skype account for yourself.
Step 3: Use Skype - preferably with a broadband or 24*7 connection, although Skype-ing Canada from a dialup connection during off peak is still doable :). Note that the quality of a Skype conversation is largely dependent on the quality of your internet connection ;).

There you go, as simple as that :).

When you get more experience using the free Skype to Skype service, you can venture into using SkypeOut which allows you to call actual telephone numbers from Skype on your computer [SkypeOut requires some money though].

Toxin,

Search these forums for all info on Skype - http://forum.skype.com/
This is the largest forum with plenty of technical info I have found yet, and the great thing is the techies from Skype will answer questions on these forums too.

Soz guys, but I forgot to ask about bandwidth usage.
...
In a nutshell bandwidth consumption is variable as it depends on the quality of your internet connection and available bandwidth, and will also be affected by how fast your processor is [to a lesser extent], unless you have a microscopic cap [of say 200MB/month] it is not likely to kill you to talk for 60 minutes on Skype...

Quality to Canada, is awesome, whether it be on ADSL or ISDN....dialup however ughhhh cough splutter....

As far as I can remember it is roughly 30Megs per hr i stand to be corrected I will measure it tonight for you....

interesting note on skype out to canada: we have a friend living there and he doesnt have internet (has at work) so we have to phone him on his mobile. more expensive to skype out to his mobile? nope, apparently theres no difference between landline and mobile numbers. at least, we dont get CHARGED for mobile numbers :)

Same goes for calls to the states - flat rate regardless of if its a mobile or landline.
