Hi all :)

I'm tired of paying R289 for a gig per month (MTN :()

I want uncapped 384K DSL line. I intend to use it for downloading stuff (24/7) and playing games online. Which ISP should I go for? MWeb? AfriHost?

Oh keep in mind that I don't have a credit card :(

Any advice? Less cost = Better!

Kitty, the uncapped solutions that are offered at the moment are not for 24/7 downing.
You can try once you're setup but somewhere along the line you are going to throw your toys out of the cot because you are not going to get what you expected. ;)

Thanks. It's very informative and useful :D

Well, the problem is when I entered my house tel. no into Telkom's ADSL checker box and pressed [enter]. I got this error message: DSL availability cannot be determined at this stage, please contact the DSL call centre on 10219.

:( That means our exchange doesn't support ADSL? I live in Mthatha. Most of my friends in there have ADSL-enabled line.

Ivy: Really? oO I intend to download stuff worth of at least 20gb every month. Not one of those heavy downloaders muahaha.

384K is good yes?

Let's see:

384/8 = max download speed - 48kb/s

1 hour of downloading = 168.75mb

12 hours of downloading = around 2 gb

A whole day = around 4 gb.

is it good? I don't use torrents to get juicy stuff. I prefer downloading stuff from RS/MU/HotFile/etc...

Currently MWEB pwns Afrihost for what you want. But still not ideal!

Umtata is well covered. Should not have a problem.

Awesome, now I feel hopeful :D

Ok, looks like I need to buy a DSL modem, order to have my line ADSL ready (need to pay R500 or something) and buy a PCI network card (My mobo's built in network card is dead - Asus P5E sucks).

How much total should I pay every month if I use 384K line plus (your recommended ISP's uncapped 384K package)?

Keep in mind that I don't have a credit card since some ISPs require a credit card number to receive payment.

Kitty09, if you want to download about 20GB of stuff a month, you don't really have to get uncapped. Remember, uncapped is SHAPED. What it means is certain things will be slowed down. That 48kb/s is a bit way too enthusiastic. I get max 42kbps. 48 is closer to your average speed for 512k.(I stand corrected if it's more, but it wont be too much more.) I ususally get about 800-1000mb in 7 hours. 6GB over the weekend.

I am with Cybersmart, I pay R300 for 10GB UNSHAPED(So nothing is slowed down) bandwidth, and they give me weekends fully uncapped. (So that does not subtract anything from my cap) I pay R30 on top of that for Nightrider, and that means whatever I download between 1am and 8am counts only 1/5 of my cap. I have by today only used about 5gb of my cap, and I have downloaded over 35GB of stuff.

I don't know if 384 shaped uncapped would be cool, so maybe do a bit of research.

BTW, the R300 includes line rental, so you only have to pay telkom for the phone line, not ADSL line rental still, so it should all be less than 450 bucks.(phone included)

Mweb has the R350 all inclusive lines. They sound like the best of the cheap uncapped products.

So are you saying it's tough to reach 20gb in a month using Mweb's uncapped 384K account? oO

I don't know...the Mweb subscribers might be better to ask. With a 384kb line I get about a gig in 7-8 hours, and that is with unshaped. I am sure with Mweb you could do way more, I just don't know how much they shape. Some guys with 4mb uncapped packages complain that sometimes their speeds are like 5-8kbps...I get average 30-40kbps all the time. So yeah, uncapped is not always the best, but I stand corrected. Go read all the threads about uncapped, particularly mweb's uncapped. You should learn a lot there.
