Hi guys,

A LOT OF QUESTIONS:

I'm moving into my own place - a flat on someone's property. The landlady says a tenant had a Telkom line installed about 3 years ago so she's sure it's still in working order. I saw the wall socket when I viewed the flat. They don't have wifi in their home, they only use the landline for phoning. Will I also have to pay landline rent or not? (because I assume the one in my flat is an extension and already being paid for by them).

Do I need to get Telkom to check the line to my flat? Or can I go directly to Axxess and sign up for adsl (with the address and landline number and they check it remotely?). Telkom is such a schlep

I only need wifi for streaming on DStv Now, Showmax, Kodi, youtube and the odd CS game. I'll probably go for the 4MB premium uncapped and the D-Link DSL-224 router - what do you think?

Thanks
Rouxle

You will have to start with Telkom. Unless the line is still active and being paid for by someone else you will have to apply for them to activate the line. After that has been done you would need to have Telkom "install" ADSL on the line (assuming this was not done by the previous tenant).

I doubt you would "share a line" with the owners of the property since there would be no way to split the bill so prepare yourself for paying voice rental + ADSL line rental + ISP package costs (some ISPs bundle the ADSL line into the package)

Lastly, welcome to the community

Borrow a phone and plug it in the socket. If you get a dial tone, it is the same line she is using.
If not, you might have your own line from the exchange.

Then it is up to you to decide if you want to ask her to put the 4mb adsl on her account and it gets added to your rent or else you can apply directly from Telkom and you get a new line. If the line goes on her account, then you must remember to add a filter to every phone in her house.

If possible, check for Fibre availabilty instead, much more future proof :)....
