Hi there

I want to overclock my Q9450. I am only able to get it at 3.2GHz with vcore of 1.24v.I have tried bumping up the voltage to get higher speeds but my cpu just don't want to be stable at 3.2GHz. I saw few internet sites where people are able to get 3.6GHz.

here is a link to the rest of my specs

nelis: what speed memory do you currently have? 2x 2GB DDR2 1066MHz 5-5-5-15?

My guess is that your problem is that your RAM can't handle the speeds at which you're trying to run it at.
Change your memory multiplier such that your RAM don't exceed their rated speed & timings.

Yes check the FSB:RAM ratio, also if you want the higher FSB you can relax you memory timings a little to 6-6-6-18. I did this on my Q6600 with DDR2 400 transcend cheapies and managed to get my memory to 450 and the CPU to 3.6 ghz. The additional memory bandwidth more than made up for the looser timings.

I tried with FSB:RAM ratio of 1:1 but still no luck. I will try relaxing my memory timings a bit and post back my results. BRB going to test quickly

Set your CPU multi to the lowest value and see how high you can go with the FSB. Might have hit a wall.

What are your temps like as well?

ok I see i can get to 3.4GHz and also my temps on 3.5GHz is a bit high. Prim95 sitting @ 65C

1.24v is modest, assuming you're not running stock heatsink. your board is a decent overclocker too....

1.35v is safe if your temps stay below 70°

cool cool. I want to know will increasing my VTT voltage help overcome the 450FSB wall I ave at the moment? I set my Multiplier at the lowest and still having issues at 450fsb. When I run prim95 1 core fails immediately. I will increase my voltage on the cpu a bit as well.

ok here is my results. Vcore @ 1.264V idle in windows and my CPU is at 3.311GHz. Also my memory is at 1102MHz. I just can't get it all past that otherwise my systems fails at prim95. I tried lots of stuff. upping the vtt, north bridge, south bridge. loosen my memory timings and also changing my FSB:RAM ratio. Nothing seems to work. I will try to get the vcore lower if my pc is working stable for 1 week.

hmm to get over the 450 wall IMHO isnt worth it in DDR2 land, what is the max multiplier you can use with that CPU?

In my experience I've always found that I personally hit stability issues over 450 (900), one core or more always flakes out on Prime, I've tried with gaming DDR2 800, and 1066 and ironically its only my old cheapy Transcend memory at slack timings that works on my setup at 450.

A couple of my friends have experienced similar issues tho we all are running on Gigabyte P35 boards which are known to be a little um finicky to say the least.

Plus also on a multiplier on 8 and FSB of 450 i've already hit a 50% OC at reasonable temps on a non G0 chip so I'm pretty happy :)

That doesn't explain why it isn't worth it to go over 450 FSB with a DDR2 based board.

That's with a budget board and only a few settings changed in BIOS. It will go higher as it's my CPU that has a FSB wall at 495.

My old E6600 even did 475*8 all day long.

With a decent DDR2 board you should be able to get ~600MHz FSB with the right RAM and settings. After that your RAM starts to limit you (Not many do 1200+ at good timings).

Whatever you're doing, you're doing it wrong :p.

Hmmm it certainly sounds like it , anyone got any high speed ddr2 lying around ?

Your OC with that chip is respectable indeed! The Q9400/Q9450's max out around there with reasonable voltage. Dual cores are a different matter altogether..
