Hey guys,

I remember seeing a great chart with the 'best' pc components in different price brackets a while back.
It was quite short but also relatively accurate - was actually just a jpg if i recall.
The problem is that I can't seem to find it again though!

Does anybody know what I'm talking about ??

Heck no! What do you need, what's your budget, let's see if we can help.

Give total budget and machine purpose and we'll slap something together quick quick :)

Well, basically a mate of mine is looking to upgrade his rig.

He needs a new motherboard and CPU, but for ~2k.
I was thinking an i3 2100, but I don't know much about the mobos in this bracket. Is AMD a better buy in this price range?

What are your guys thoughts?

Purpose of the rig? :p At that price point AMDs offering will be better for gaming since their IGPs are ahead of Intel

Yeah gaming is the primary purpose I believe. You'd recommend a Phenom X4 of some sorts then?

Whoa hold, I confused myself I think
What exactly does your mate already have? Include the resolution he games at as well please

He's got an old 9500GT - but is looking to upgrade that as well for under 1.5k. (so essentially 3.5k for the mobo/cpu and gfx)
I was looking at your other thread Archer and the GTX460 seems best, but I can't find the 768 version for the price that you have in your graph!
Games on a 22" screen, so I assume 1680 x 1050.

Prices in that chart are a bit outdated :/ Ok, now that we know what we've got we can do this properly...
Best bet (new components) is a Phenom quad, maybe even a Thuban Hex on a 800 series mobo. You should just barely get in under R2000. Then you should be able to get a HD6850 for R1500, last time I checked prices anyway...

edit: gah, the RAM he has got prob wont fit in a new build, please check that its DDR3. If not, then you need about R400 for 4GB RAM as well

Yeah, no you're right about the DDR3. I'd already set aside +- R300 for the RAM!

Will see if I can find these components, thanks dude. :)

Just hang on, someone needs to chime in with Thuban vs i3. I'd suspect the extra cores, even though they are slower, would be a better bet, but let someone who's gone into the details a bit more fill you in. Alas, I'm a bit of a high end gamer so I dont always pay attention to this end of the spectrum

Awesome suggestions. And yeah I agree AMD really puts out a lot more in this bracket!

I have the 1055t and I can tell you it's a fantastic chip. Sitting now at 3.8ghz 24/7 near stock volts and doesn't get over 45c in stress tests (in watercooling). At those clocks it keeps pace with mid-end Sandy chips.
