Help please - router issue [SOLVED]

Hi all hope someone can help.
I recently got a desktop Iburst modem which I was connecting with fine but each time I wanted to use a different computer I had to change the cabling so I bought a router D-link DiR-615 (it had fairly good ratings, does Wireless N as well as G and was a good price - around R600.)
I have gotten as far as connecting the modem into the routers internet, I can "connect" - at least it says its connected - but I cannot connect to internet.
MTU is set to 1392 as instructed elsewhere.
I had a D-Link tech try to remote work on it last night but since to connect to the internet I have to unplug the modem from the router and plug directly into the laptop he couldn't work while the setup was wired as it should be.
Any suggestions as to what may be the problem please? Apart from saying I should have bought a "whatever" brand modem - fundamentally I can't see any reason why this one shouldn't work...
Thanks

Scratch the question - I found a firmware called "Iburt" in the manufacturers ftp, and tried that and wel - I'm sending this from the setup so I guess it worked!

Thanks for the feedback.

I have always been a fan of anything that can run tomato http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato I run the QoS with VoIP and the calls are crystal clear even if the kids are downloading

I then picked up a router for R100 (Belkin) and loaded DD-WRT http://www.dd-wrt.com After using it for a few weeks I am impressed and it is an excellent alternative.

Now back to the Dlink 615, read this: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=13599.0

It's true that some problems are solved with a firmware update, when one is available, but more often than not, users are stuck with issues that severely impact their Internet experience and no fix in sight. However, before starting throwing routers out and spending money on new ones (yes, I've read a lot of people saying that), users should be aware that there is another option at their disposal, in the form of a custom open source firmware called DD-WRT.
